Does anyone here know any good Japanese podcasts available through itunes?
Podcasts saturated with English such as Japanesepod don't appeal to me. I would prefer native material. 宜しくお願いします!

The first one that comes to my mind is Replica Blue. RB is a kind of sci-fi manga-style radio-drama produced by a school of voice actors. The best thing is that RB is just as cool as it sounds. Smile

Thanks for the response!
I'll subscribe now.

Replica Blue is awesome thanks for the recommendation, it's like a Japanese equivalent of the BBC radio dramas. Does anyone know any more Japanese radio dramas with voice actors?

There was a link posted on these forums. That provided native audio in various topics. Some are just general conversation while others are about psychology topics. Can't find it now though.

There was one that had audio with general conversation that would be good to listen to over and over again.

I've found some pretty good podcasts recently through itunes.

Here are some:
「ねえ, ねえ聞いて!」 - a young girl who talks about a ton of different topics, from healing through laughter, to the Chinese zodiac, from nostalgic school supplies to kanji/word origins/trivia. It's also very, very easy to understand. She's so fun to listen to, and she doesn't sound annoying/doesn't particularly have a high, screechy voice. (when you're looking for it, you'll see a picture of her cat). I'm so glad I found this podcast -- I'm sure many here will enjoy as well.

「nanalife」- This is a nice, calm podcast aimed for women, but there's nothing wrong with men listening as well Wink It's very relaxing and most of the topics are related to health, beauty, aroma therapy, aging, etc. Very easy to understand. Good for if you have a play list designated for sleeping/relaxing.

「新刊ラジオ」- I couldn't find this on itunes again, so here's the link to download online: http://www.sinkan.jp/radio/index.html . You'll probably get an itunes link there too.
This podcast is all about book reviews. You will even get what seems to be a portion of the audio-book thrown into the podcast. There are lots of interesting books to choose to and hear about through the podcasts. Also a good opportunity to find out about Japanese books, of course n_n

「スターウオッチングエクスプレス」("Star-Watching Express") - Astrology podcast Smile Great program with nice music in the background. You can tell he's so enthusiastic about looking at stars and planets, so it's fun listening to~

「神戸市心かよわす市民運動」- This podcast is of people reading letters from children. There's one about a kid talking about his autistic brother, another one with a kid talking about his grandpa who uses a wheelchair and another one about kids who are teased. Very easy to understand. I just wish the guy they use to read them didn't sound so newscaster-like and impersonal. There's a woman who reads some of them and it sounds better.

「日本の童話」- One of the narrators for these is so funny~ she narrates 「キャラメルと飴玉」and 「二つの鞄」and her voice is hilarious~ please look for it! ^^

「平良とみの沖縄タイム〜なんくるないさ〜」 - You may have to get through lots of intro music or ads and things like that to get to the talking, but this is a very interesting podcast done by a older lady in Okinawa. She talks about many things related to Okinawan culture -- food, health, lifestyle. She sounds so sweet and kind~ it's always nice listening to this lady.

Tip: Best way to find Japanese podcasts is to switch your iTunes store language to Japanese. On the bottom of whatever page you're on in the iTunes store, you'll see a flag (of whatever country you're in, most likely). It'll be in a circular shape, on the right hand side. Click that and you'll bring up all the flags. Find the Japanese flag and click it.

I found JUNK radio a while back and one of the DJs sounds like a lot of fun... At least, -he- is having lot of fun... But he talks too fast for me to understand much of it. I'm looking forward to listening regularly once I understand better.

If you're into video games, I randomly stumbled across ゲーム脳ばと which is pretty good.

Anybody know any quiet podcasts that might be suitable for keeping on while sleeping? I've been collecting podcasts since I've started learning Japanese and almost none of them are quiet enough for keeping on at night while making sure they are loud enough to be heard during my dosing off/waking up states.

I've just downloaded several tons of podcasts from iTunes. There are quite a lot from "Books A to Z", as well as lots of others, also all in Japanese. (I also found lots for my other languages I'm studying. There's normally something in the language you want, with only a few exceptions.)

to KREVA: http://jclab.wordpress.com/ "Japanese Classical Literature at Bedtime". She reads it so beautifully! おくのほそ道 is a beautiful book too, I listen to it a lot. But if you only want modern Japanese....I have to say GOMEN for today~~!

I think bedtime audio probably requires a voice you like, though.

I listen to this podcast called Philosophy Zoo. It's about (surprise!) philosophy. I can't understand most of it, but it matches my tastes. Anyway, the format of the show is a one-on-one interview between the host and a guest. The host has a PhD in philosophy, but works as a housewife taking care of her child. Most of the guests are either professors or PhD candidates at prominent universities.

There's an episode called 「ひきこもりの哲学」 or something like that. The guest is a PhD student at Chiba University who dropped out of high school when he was 15 and become a hikikomori for 12 years. The degree he's pursuing is sociology, but his interests lie within philosophy as well. During the episode, for five minutes or so he talks about how the first movie he ever saw was Doraemon when he was in junior high. Anyway, it's fun and interesting to listen to.
