Mark all hard first time? - SeanG021 - 2010-04-03

Generally, I only have a specific amount of time each day I can spend on RTK, so I tend to go through things in this order:

1. Anki reviews
2. Study next 30 kanji
3. Unsuspend those 30 on anki
4. Review new kanji. However, since this is all in a short period of time and I've just learned them, I feel as if I should mark them as hard so I'll see them again tomorrow and give them a first real memory test.

Is there any pitfalls associated with using this method? Am I going about it in the right way, or could I do something differently? Will it affect the length until I see it again from the second review if I marked it as hard the first time? Any help appreciated.

Well Sean, someone pointed out to me recently that marking them all hard EVERY time would very quickly have my daily reviews at around 700 and reach at least 1200 before its all done. However, I don't know what the math is if you only do it once and then after that rate them normally. I don't think it's really necessary after some consideration. I would rate them the way I really felt about how easy/hard it was remember them. Another suggestion someone mentioned is in a different thread is to do your stories/studying the night before, then in the morning get up and add them to your deck. That provides that "first real memory test" you speak of, without trying to second-guess the algorithm.

EDIT: For the record, the only reason I was marking them hard every time to begin with was because I'm experimenting with a new learning method. Studying the normal way, I wouldn't even consider it. It's just that unnecessary.

I usually mark something as hard on the first review, if it's something that I just learned. If I happened to know it already somehow, I will go with good or easy.
In anki, I think choosing "good" will put it out about 5 days or so, which is just way too long for me.

For new or reasonably new cards I tend to look at the number of days before next review and ask myself how long I think I can remember the answer. I then grade on that basis. This tends to naturally produce a lot of "hard" responses for first-time reviews, easing off as things become more familiar.

Generally, however, I think it's best not to have a "rule", but to just go with your instincts. If it is working for you then carry on (irrespective of what others are doing). If it's not working then adjust as required to suit your own pace, ability, time and aspirations.

If you're trying something new then best to just jump in and see how it works out. Keep watch on your progress. Are you feeling stressed? Ease back or toughen up. Too many failed reviews? Reduce the number of new cards you're adding or grade yourself harder. Getting bored? Increase the challenge, change your approach, find some new source that is more interesting.

If you're normal then this is a continual process... pace and approach might change on a monthly (or even weekly) basis. To be continuously efficient you have to be continuously aware of your situation and respond to it, keeping the end goal at the front of your mind.

I would say it doesn't really matter.

Let's assume you don't remember the Kanji after your first review. In the long term it doesn't make a big difference if you fail it tomorrow or in 4 days. If you marked them as "hard" and don't fail it you will be at the same position as if you had marked them as "good/easy" the first time. If you mark them as "good/easy" the first time and then still remember them after 4 days that's even better. So, what it comes down to is that a few days more or less don't make a difference. Failing/Passing them sooner or later will give you the same result.

That's especially true when doing ~30 Kanji per day, which means you will spend more than 2 months in order to complete RTK.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I suppose I'll mostly just carry on the way I am then and experiment with a few cards to see if it feels right to switch my method over.

I have to say: I've only used this website to review my RTK1 stuff, but I downloaded Anki for my RTK 2 stuff. And the 'Good' button gives me waaay too many days between the first and second review! I prefer the rate of this site, so I usually click Hard after the first review, possibly after the second review, even if I got it right.

There might be a way to change it in Anki, but I'm not that good with it yet, so I haven't found that out yet.

You can adjust the intervals in the settings if you think that they´re off for the material in whatever deck.

Probably doesn't matter much, but something well learned (IE, you did a good story, good visualization, spent enough time on it etc) you should easily be able to wait 3 days before you see it again.

The latest version of Anki marks all new cards as hard by default (space bar) now anyways..

Personally I use hard if it's something I studied that day and remembered, and easy if I studied it a few days before and never got around to doing the first review in Anki yet.

I was doing that for a while but then stopped. It was just kind of irritating to have more reviews than I needed. I've found that since I stopped worrying so much and been more liberal with my "good" ratings that my retention rate has gone up. Less second guessing myself, I guess.

Isn't it:
1 day
3 days
etc?
So 1 day before you first see it again, not three?

I've been pressing `hard' nearly everytime I see a new card. Plus, I don't make stories for vocab, nor do I spend much time doing the initial study. Maybe I should switch over.
Also, isn't it normally 5 days, not 3 days, for normal?

Mark all hard first time? - Koos83 - 2010-04-10

On Anki it is, but on this site I think it's three.
