tummai Wrote:3) All accents are welcome and encouraged! We received a feature request and will be adding an "Accent" field to the profiles where you can specify your accent. Each recording will be tagged with the recording user's accent and it will show up next to the playback widget. This way you can see at a glance what accent the text is spoken with, and you can listen to multiple recordings of the same text to compare accents.

.
This feature would be greatly appreciated.

I don't see any problems arising yet, but it might also be helpful to be able rate recordings and report terrible recordings as being, well, terrible. Just in case.

It would also be nice to see the translations of the site into languages other than English completed to make the site more accessible to *ahem* people who speak languages other than English with a native accent.
Maybe you could make a form for people to be able translate the text of the site into their native language?

One in the same? How old are you?
edit: On second thought, it hadn't crossed my mind that you could be a girl.

edit: On third though, Moses2010 could potentially have a badass voice

Wow. Moses -does- have a bad-ass voice. Dude should be a voice actor.

I get the sarcasm for the second one,'cause it's just stupid, but what's wrong with my submission ? 0.0

@hereticalrants
Odd, when I saw it yesterday, it was posted as an English request...?

RhinoSpike: Foreign Language Audio on Demand - Smackle - 2010-04-02

This is witchcraft! It was in the English section originally! I say we burn the wretch!

RhinoSpike: Foreign Language Audio on Demand - nest0r - 2010-04-02

This will not stand!

RhinoSpike: Foreign Language Audio on Demand - wccrawford - 2010-04-02

Burn the witch!

(I saw it listed under English, too. It got better.)

RhinoSpike: Foreign Language Audio on Demand - hereticalrants - 2010-04-02

Dudes, I never put it in English.

I did have one that I had tagged as English for about 2 minutes, but that was a different one, and there is no way you all saw it as being English in that short amount of time, unless there is something wrong with the site.

By the way, I would be psyched about this site if I were learning English, but the other languages are not very active.

The Japanese section is admittedly better than the Spanish, but most of the publicity this site is getting appears to be in the English-natives sphere. I mean, if this thread is its main advertisement....

RhinoSpike: Foreign Language Audio on Demand - Nukemarine - 2010-04-02

Heretical, this is more of a "if you build it they will come" beginning of sorts. If there's a source for Japanese speakers to get native English recordings, then they'll return the favor.

English will likely be the largest section though, yes.

RhinoSpike: Foreign Language Audio on Demand - kendo99 - 2010-04-02

Learn enough japanese to go on japanese blogs and forums and advertise it there...spread the 語...

RhinoSpike: Foreign Language Audio on Demand - Thora - 2010-04-02

Great idea. But...doesn't having some non-native speakers reading kind of defeat the purpose?

Thora Wrote:Great idea. But...doesn't having some non-native speakers reading kind of defeat the purpose?
Like who?

I only really see Katz doing that, and his Japanese accent is less strange than his English one anyway.

Most of the people I looked at that have two native languages on their profile were either honestly raised bilingual or only do recordings in their... actual native language.

There is the occassional oddball, though. You should be good enough to notice when a recording sounds unnatural ... it might happen.

I found several. An American or something reading Mandarin for example.

Shouldn't be too terribly hard to weed those out...

RhinoSpike: Foreign Language Audio on Demand - Thora - 2010-04-03

Not if I'm a language learner, the reader doesn't indicate an accent/dialogue, the name doesn't offer a clue, and the accent is good but not native.

I guess I don't understand why someone would bother. I suppose they might be unaware that their accent, intonation or reading in their second language is not quite native sounding. Which is what this site is about, right?

For eg, a friend has lived in Canada since grade 9, is a voracious reader and an exceptionally good writer. He writes for a living. He never completely lost his foreign accent though.

They bother because they think they are special and that everyone should pay attention to them. They ignore all the pleas and warnings about having native speakers only because they are special and people will thank them for it.

Yes, these people annoy the **** out of me.

This RhinoSpike thing made me curious - is there's such a thing as an audio forum? Can you imagine clicking on a post and hearing the poster's voice? Or a video forum? nah, that'd be too much.

Audio might be faster than typing. There'd be no spelling concerns. I suppose it'd be hard to skim through stuff though (unless speech to text becomes that good/common)

I think I like associating a real human being with their messages, but perhaps total anonymity is what most prefer. And text is probably better for some folks communicating in their 2nd and 3rd language.

RhinoSpike: Foreign Language Audio on Demand - kendo99 - 2010-04-04

It's not so much that I prefer total anonymity. I like thinking of the people I interact with online as real people also. However, I'm already prone to typing things without thinking and making an ass of myself. If I could just blurt outloud whatever popped into my head...I'd be eating my foot all day long. At least this way, I sometimes reread what I just wrote and realize, "Hey, that's idiotic." Wish that "sometimes" was a little more frequently, but it would certainly be worse if I was just hitting a button, talking, and then hitting "post."

Looks like this site's got a nice selection of .txt + .mp3s now.

Anyone been using it?

Now that subs2srs supports .trs, my interest is rekindled in getting audio for paragraphs or brief swaths of found text.
