"Samurai Metal" this is what japanese metal should sound like! - dave141190 - 2010-03-24 These guys are too epic for this world "Whispered" <-- Most epic song ever! I just had too share these guys "Samurai Metal" this is what japanese metal should sound like! - Draak - 2010-03-24 This is the most epic thing ive seen! "Samurai Metal" this is what japanese metal should sound like! - ruiner - 2010-03-24 I think the first time I heard koto music mixed with something harsher was on seminal (rhythmic) noise artist Converter's album Blast Furnace: (koto or shamisen or whatever ;p) There's another noise track that uses that koto song Godan-Kinuta or something but I forget who did it. "Samurai Metal" this is what japanese metal should sound like! - uberstuber - 2010-03-24 Coaltar of the deepers did a bunch of metal stuff "Samurai Metal" this is what japanese metal should sound like! - ruiner - 2010-03-24 Phroq's tracks on this split with Guilty Connector (feel free to ignore those, it's even missing track 7 ;p) is what I would call in this thread Samurai Noise--it's very good, featuring nice use of space and high-end frequencies mixed w/ traditional instrumentation, and it really got me into the latest crop of noise at the time: [Admin: please post youtube or other listening clips instead of downloads, thanks] This limited cdr release from 2002 sold out years ago*, so hopefully it's not a big deal to post it here. The tracks in question are "Frequency Ronin", "Kohei, the Noisy Samurai", "The Last Blade", and "The End". *From Phroq's homepage/discography list: "2002 : Phroq / Guilty Connector "Snowfall is next door" cdr Gameboy rec. I love this song (and band, naturally!). OP's links are interesting, but not really my kind of METVL (I take pride in my metal snobbery!). Koto makes everything sound cooler, though! As far as genuinely Japanese-flavored metal goes (and I know I've pimped these guys more than once before), though, Birushanah(毘盧遮那) remains my favorite. Definitely not a band for everyone though - they're very intense, abrasive sludge metal and half of their songs breaking the 10-minute barrier (and their most badass of all, 「赤い闇」 breaking 20). None of the clips on youtube do them justice, but this live performance is pretty amazing. The first few minutes of this one as well, but when the guitars and bass kick in, it becomes an unlistenable distortion fest. Finally, here's a full track from their EP that juuust barely fits into a youtube video. Mindblowing! There's also 五人一首 (which I've also pimped approximately 40 times so far). Pretty sure Sigh has some more eastern flavored songs too, but I can't recall which ones specifically off hand. Hell, while I'm at it, here's some samurai flavored drum'n'bass courtesy of Photek, circa more years back than I'd like to admit! Everytime I listen to this, I feel like I am playing Turrican on the Amiga 500. Besides, defining this band Whispered as Samurai metal is kind of misleading, since the violin work and scales they are using come from China, not Japan. Also that koto sound is suspicious. I play koto, and the sound I hear is more reminiscent of Chinese or Korean versions of the Koto. But since there are several types of koto, and I did not play all of them, I admit I could be wrong. It makes more sense to call this Oriental Classical Metal. But all the power to you guys for enjoying it. I will stick with my Dillinger Escape Plan, Zao and Converge for the time being. What'd you think of my recommendation, Phroq? ^_- "Samurai Metal" this is what japanese metal should sound like! - ファブリス - 2010-03-25 I quite like Converter! Never heard about it before. Well I like this kind of noisy music at times, like Aphex Twin's ventolin. It's like zen koan for the ears Is Phroq similar ? I couldn't get search results in Grooveshark. (mind that seems totally unrelated to the subject topic ?) Edit: Oh I see, Converter:Resolution also has oriental sounds;... very cool!
"Samurai Metal" this is what japanese metal should sound like! - ruiner - 2010-03-25 Just Google for Phroq + Snowfall. ;p Frequency Ronin and Kohei, the Noisy Samurai were the main two tracks in question. Not quite the same style as Converter. ^_- "Samurai Metal" this is what japanese metal should sound like! - Tobberoth - 2010-05-06 ruiner Wrote:I think the first time I heard koto music mixed with something harsher was on seminal (rhythmic) noise artist Converter's album Blast Furnace:NOO, the video was removed!!!
