USS George Washington at Yokasuka? - pembles - 2010-03-24 Apparently the USS George Washington aircraft carrier is in Yokasuka, Yokohama at the moment, can anybody here confirm that? I was thinking of taking my daughter down to have a look, but I'm not really sure where to go, or if it is even there... I've personally never seen an aircraft carrier before so I will be happy if I can just see it from a distance... Does anyone know anything about this? otherwise I guess I will just take a train down and have a look... Thanks! USS George Washington at Yokasuka? - Hashiriya - 2010-03-24 check the website online? USS George Washington at Yokasuka? - pembles - 2010-03-24 Thanks. The Japan Base / yokosuka site isn't really that helpful, and the official uss gw site doesn't respond. If anyone has actually been to yokosuka that would be great. USS George Washington at Yokasuka? - Nukemarine - 2010-03-24 It's at Yokosuka which is about 30 minutes from Yokohama. You can see it from Admiral Perry's landing which is near the Shiori and JR Station and next to the Daiei mall. It was sitting there last week when I went to the base to renew my wife's identification. Granted, it's a boat so it has a tendency to float off to somewhere. It's probably going to be going on a long deployment in time, so sooner is better than later if you want to take a peak. If it helps, just google "quarterdeck George Washington" which will give you the local number "046-816-7382". Call that up and ask if they offer tours (he won't know most likely, but that you get an answer tells you they're still in port in Yokosuka). If you're not military nor have a friend that'll sponsor you on base, you can wait for the occasional open base day to visit along with the tens of thousands of other Japanese that'll visit that day. The next one around this time of year usually is the Hanami festival. USS George Washington at Yokasuka? - pembles - 2010-03-24 Thank you Nukemarine! Very helpful. I was going to go today but it's raining... I'll give them a call and go this week sometime. Cheers. |
