Feed Me Japanese - Nemotoad - 2010-03-23

Hi all,

(Sorry if this has already been discussed somewhere here, I did a search but couldn't find anything).

I'm not at the stage yet where I'm SRSing sentences - at least, I tried it and I found it too difficult, so I'm concentrating on finishing RTK right now. But because I'm a keen bean (aka procrastinating) I've been looking around for other resources.

Has anyone checked out Feed Me Japanese?

http://www.feedmejapanese.com/

Does anyone use it? I signed up for it, and it seems to have some cool features, but since I haven't really started with sentences I'm not sure how useful they are. For example there's a content stream that shows you what other people are trying to SRS, and a search feature that searches Yahoo for more content given some kanji you're trying to review. There's a parser that helps identify just the words you want to SRS in your sentences, which I think is pretty cool, and a bookmarklet that lets you copy and paste sentences from websites you're trying to read. Sorry this is kind of a half-arsed description of it but honestly I haven't really used it properly so I can't give a proper review. I'm just wondering if I should be distracting myself with all these shiny new bells and whistles or just stick to the tried and true Anki SRSing.

The stream seems to change often, so some people must be using it. The blog hasn't been updated for a while, but according to a post in the forum the guy still seems to be developing it.

I apparently signed up long ago and never used it. I'm in a better position to use it now, so I'll probably give it a try.

I like the description. It sounded like a branch off of AJALT and SRS.
I'll take a closer look at it.

Been playing with it for a bit and its a nice idea that got me to find some nice japanese. But there is one extreme annoyance sticking out to me at the moment. And that is that it's annoyingly slow to add new sentences.

Hm, adding them in bulk is rather slow, I admit... But I think the idea is supposed to be that you study the sentence as you are adding it. I noticed it doesn't bring them up for review until the next day after you add them.

Still, I've been adding sentences from the japanese game feed I found a week ago and hopefully I'll soon be able to read those without my eyes crossing. Wink

What does AJALT mean? All Japanese All Long Time?

It's AJATT dude. Just pointing it out because I saw you writing AJALT in some other topics. Wink

Eh, might want to be careful on the furigana it comes up with.

開発者 ... Supposed to be かいはつしゃ (I think) but came up with かいはつもの. (Doesn't make any sense in context.)

I wasn't able to use their tools to correct it, either.

Yeah I also have had a problem with the furigana. like 変 gave me がわ with no way to change it. Could be a nasty mistake for people who don't know what that word should be in certain context.

but don't get me wrong its a very well done tool especially as it is still in beta.

I've never used the site proper but I used to really enjoy reading its blog. Unfortunately it's not been updated lately. Sad

NOTE: AJALT also stands for "The Association for Japanese-Language Teaching" , which wrote the book "Japanese for Professionals". JFP is great for learning the business japanese used at the workplace. Covers basically every situation you'll encounter.
