Has anyone tried it? I was thinking that it would be a good idea to switch to a complete japanese desktop but thusfar was　worried that doing complex linux tasks would be just too difficult.
Has anyone used Ubuntu Japanese edition? Is it usable for a intermediate student?

Just try it out. It's very easy to switch back if you don't like it. Go to administration >Language Support and add support for Japanese. You can switch from there or using the login manager.

I used it for probably two years, but now I'm using Linux Mint.
It's not too bad, but it can be kind of painful sometimes to use stuff like the terminal because depending on what you're doing, you get lots of rapid-fire vocab (like using apt-get). Not to mention cryptic error messages are usually not any less cryptic in a foreign language, that's for sure.
On the upside, when something does go wrong, you're motivated to look it up so you can understand and fix the problem.
And yeah, if you ever get overwhelmed then it's a piece of pie to switch back to English.
If you're intermediate, I'd say you could handle it no problem. One surefire way to know before you commit to it is to try it firsthand, either with a Live CD or a virtual machine.

I did it for months as a beginner and did fine. It's easy to switch back to english briefly when you can't figure something out.

Locale settings are not known to love me. The reason I switched to Mint actually was because I really screwed up the LANG stuff and I never could get it fixed.
