n00b question. Is there a simple way to do this with hotkeys? That is, to click+drag+copy, and hit a hotkey and it saves to txt? As it stands, I can click+drag, ctrl+alt+x to bring up a Stardict entry list, and then hit Space and it saves the word/entry to a text file. But it saves the result entry word rather than the copied text--which I'd prefer, to preserve the inflection/any extra particles/words I decide to copy with it.
Anyway, I'm just trying to streamline my process in minor ways (avoid alt-tabbing, etc.). Perhaps there's something glaringly obvious I'm missing.

It's funny but I just heard of this program today from someone saying they use it to collect examples of stuff in the language they're learning (I can't remember where I saw it though; oh here it is. http://www.tofugu.com/2010/03/09/how-to-use-evernote-to-study-japanese-or-any-other-language/ ) called Evernote. Looks like overkill in features for what you're doing but check out this video; at the 39s mark it talks about highlighting stuff in your browser and then you can right click evernote in the taskbar and choose clip current selection:
I'm not sure exactly what happens after that since I haven't used it and I'm not sure exactly what you're trying to do but it seems like it might be close to what you're looking for.

Thanks, yeah, there's a ton of software like that, though EverNote does look good. Mostly I just want something simply to copy/paste from multiple applications to a default txt file without having to keep it open and switch to my text editor each time. I guess there's no way to do this without having another perpetually open file, guess I'll make do with Stardict's entries, and just try to remember any inflection changes, etc. Might look into that custom hotkeys program, depends on how easy/light on overhead it is.

Try Clipboard Help+Spell or Clipmate, personally I use the latter more often.

That Evernote program's pretty annoying, after installing it (took 30 minutes or so w/ NET framework service pack), I found various annoyances for free users such as ads and having to sign up for an online service I don't want/can't use. Some kind of automatic audio played as well. Figures, given it was presented at that Tofugu site. Must be an affiliate. Uninstalled since it seemed rather bulky for my minimal purpose. Couldn't get any other software to simply save clipboard to txt with a hotkey, I think some might be able to do that, but they seem overly complicated. ;p /complaining
Back to Stardict/Rikaichan-only.
Edit: Just realized that with StarDict, if you turn up a 'not found', you can still send it to the txt file with hotkey command. I can make use of this. Will add slight preceding clutter, but good enough for my purposes...

Ruiner, have a look at the utilities here, I reckon you could just copy as you go to a clipboard then when you're done just mass export it to a text file...

So I was interested in that Evernote thing, but it seems like Google Notebook would be just as good, except free and...well, it's google, so a lot of people probably already have accounts

If you're in OSX you can use that to do all sorts of tricks with the clipboard (including just echo it to a file).
