Japanese font on win mobile - Lindley - 2010-03-07

How do you make your pocket pc (if you have one, that is) show Japanese fonts? I've tried to do it several times - install msgothic and msmincho for winmobile, copy these files directly from PC, install them using installer that came with Japanese dictionary, soft reset - and nothing. Nada. Zero. In word processors, calendar, clipboard tools Japanese characters show up as blank squares. Any ideas?

There was something about a registry entry that substituted the kanji capable font for another one, but it's been long enough ago that I don't recall the exact procedure to get it to work on my WM phone.

Okay, I finally got it. I copied ms mincho, ms gothic, meiryo to both /Windows folder and /Windows/Fonts. Also, installed Japanese support for WM6 (dl'ed from web) and voila Smile

"Lets Japan No5" from http://www.asukal.jp/English/LocalizeCABS.htm is the key for displaying Kanji in WinMobile 5/6. The rest of the stuff deals with installing an IME on your phone. Note that you no longer need to tinker with the registry, that's all taken care of by the CAB.

You do lose English predictive text though - apparently it's either Japanese display or English predictive text due to peculiarities of the WinMobile registry.

"Let's Japan" has been updated for Windows Mobile 6. See http://asukal.net/blog/?p=364 or just click on http://hn801.hkes.com/Data/Localize/LetsJapanNo6.zip for the direct link.

I'm using a T-Mobile Wing which is an HTC phone running WinMobile6. It works beautifully - no tinkering iwth registry or anything - just install the CAB and the phone is Japanese ready. When I installed Opera Mini it gave me the Japanese version. Google Maps comes up in Japanese. When I go to websites that have a Japanese option, Opera gives me that by preference. I love it!

For input, I installed "Japanese Input" which is freeware from Ookii.org. See http://ookii.org/software/japaneseinput/ for details and a download link. Let'sJapan installs a japanese font so there's no need to install one for this. Now when I click on the selection menu for keyboard, etc., Japanese Input is one of the selections.

It also works very well. Now my Windows Mobile phone is entirely Japanese capable. I'm delighted. Smile
