Beginner: Best step-by-step approach to learn with RTK? - aqublue - 2010-03-06

Ok, I'll keep this short - Oh, and if i'm repeating myself and there is a very good thread that gives newbies a step-by-step approach to learning the language with RTK and beyond, please point it out please.

1) RTK does not teach precise meaning, only vague correct? I.e, even for single kanji words in Japanese (not compounds), the given english keywords make no sense in real Japanese writing, yes?

2) Therefore, this is mainly a course to teach handwriting and differentiation of characters?

Ok, now: once you've finished learning how to write and recognize these characters, what is the next step? How do you turn this knowledge into actual reading and speaking ability?
What is the first thing most people do here after finishing RTK, in order to take the next step?

Thanks
Alqa

An individual kanji is typically used in a number of words that cover a range of meanings. It is therefore often difficult to give a single precise meaning to a kanji even in Japanese. On top of this, Heisig's method requires that each kanji is given a different keyword, so sometimes the best English equivalent has already been used for another character.

Having said that, most of the meanings given in RTK are the best English equivalent and are very useful later in learning vocabulary. I made a table comparing English names given by by various sources here.
