(drum roll) JLPT RESULTS! - coverup - 2010-02-03

Got mine delivered to my house today. Passed level 2, futhamuckas!

Writing/Vocab: 74/100
Listening: 89/100
Reading/Grammar: 165/200

Overall: 82%

And I just took my first job interview in Japanese. Wish I had checked my post before I went because I told them I didn't know the results yet!

good god the post office is slow out here

(drum roll) JLPT RESULTS! - liosama - 2010-02-03

Oh congratulations! 82 is an excellent mark

I hope everyone else the best

(drum roll) JLPT RESULTS! - nadiatims - 2010-02-03

passed 2級, no surprises. Got a somewhat disappointing 76%. Probably should have got a better result but i did though some pretty bad test taking on the day, also didn't really study for it. Writing/vocab was my strongest section. I'm hoping to get 1級 in July. Should be doable if I crank up the listening/reading.

Meh.

"Dear 2009 JLPT Test Taker,

Due to technical difficulties, we need to temporarily suspend the display of all 2009 Japanese Language Proficiency Test results in My Account. We apologize for the inconvenience and will get back to you when the issues have been resolved."

Nice congrulations on the test. I was wondering if i should start taking JLPT 4 and 3. I hear JLPT 4 is pretty basic and that it can be easily obtained, same with level 3. Level 2 and 1 are probably still out of my grasp, well maybe 2 is within my grasp but 1 not just yet.

Anyhow what level of japanese do you need to for taking level 4 and 3 of JLPT?
(I can understand basic grammer no problem+listening is easy in that sense, same with basic reading, etc. I'm now in the intermediate stage of starting to decode complicated things such as news+novels.)

(drum roll) JLPT RESULTS! - vosmiura - 2010-02-03

Levels 4 and 3 are petty basic. Sounds like you should aim higher.

They are also useless. Wink I'd wait until at least JLPT 2.

You can download PDFs of sample questions for the new (2010) Levels 1-5 tests at (url)http://www.jlpt.jp/e/about/new-jlpt.html(/url).

And can someone please tell me how to make the damn tags go away?

(drum roll) JLPT RESULTS! - ta12121 - 2010-02-03

@BJohnsen
Thanks for the link!

@Evil dragon.
At my level of japanese, level 4+3 would be a joke. But unno still feel like i should take them. But yea level 2 and 1 is what i should aim for in the longer run. I think i'll search around a find practise exams for the tests and stuff for each level and see where i am lacking and just buy preparation books for the JLPT tests and such, or any other textbooks that can help.

(drum roll) JLPT RESULTS! - Hashiriya - 2010-02-03

as I stated in another thread I passed the JLPT 3, wouldn't exactly refer to it as a cake-walk as some other people have, but it is very doable

(drum roll) JLPT RESULTS! - zanzou - 2010-02-04

Yeah, from previous JLPT3 tests, it actually seems to be worth taking at some point before you hit the intermediate stage. Works as a nice goal to work towards and would probably humble a lot of its naysayers, I think. It's amazing how many simple problems you miss when you actually have to answer them on a test.

But everyone's pretty much right on it being completely useless for anything other than that.

Oh yeah, and congrats and good luck to those who took it. Smile

(drum roll) JLPT RESULTS! - Jarvik7 - 2010-02-04

@zanzou: No one will be humbled by JLPT3. People will either not know what JLPT is and thus not care, or know that JLPT3 is still pretty basic and still not care.

There is nothing WRONG with taking it, but it's a waste of money when the cert is worth nothing and you could have just taken a previous test off of the internet for free. Spend the money on books instead.

My recommended order:
Study for JLPT4
Study for JLPT3
Study for JLPT2
Take JLPT2
Study for JLPT1
Take JLPT1
Study for Kanji Kentei 10-5
Take Kanji Kentei 5
Study for Kanji Kentei 4
Take Kanji Kentei 4 <-- I am here

..and so on until you reach 準2級 (any farther and you'll be better at kanji and jukugo than most Japanese people). Of course, also do other studying and reading that isn't just test focused.

(drum roll) JLPT RESULTS! - kame3 - 2010-02-04

@Jarvik: How do you think this list will change with the upcoming JLPT changes?
Do you think the new level N3 is worth to do?

(drum roll) JLPT RESULTS! - FutureBlues - 2010-02-04

Passed 2級 here:

Writing/Vocabulary: 76/100 (76%)
Listening: 79/100 (79%)
Reading/Grammar: 162/200 (81%)

Total: 317/400 (79%)

I suffered randomly on the listening section, mostly because I hadn't ever done it before, so instead of looking at the questions while everyone else was doing the example problem, I just went along with it and missed a few questions because I was listening for the wrong information. I'm pretty sure I totally bombed the graphing questions too, because I was expecting them to pop up on the reading, rather than the listening, and it was just an overload of bullshit information that I didn't really expect.

The Writing/Vocab score is about where I thought it would be, although I expected to do a little better. I think I rushed through it a bit too fast, worried about time, and thus missed a few random questions-- especially those without any kanji in the sentence, in addition to the questions that I just didn't know.

Reading/Grammar went well. While my percentile score on that part was almost exactly even with the rest of them, but when I walked out of that section, I was convinced I had passed. The massive reading test prep I did really helped. And, I started from the back of the test, working through the grammar and the shortest readings first and then going into the longer passages. I actually finished this section with more than 10 minutes left to go back and guess at the 5-10 questions I had left blank.

So yeah, pretty happy with my performance. If it hadn't been my first time taking the JLPT I think I could have improved my score by 5-10% simply by being better prepared for the type of questions and testing methods that I ran into, especially in regards to the listening section.

Anyone have any opinion if the new JLPT level 3 (in betwen current 2 and 3) will be worth taking? I'm not seaching for excuses to take a low level JLPT, if it's useless I won't bother with it. But it does seem like a good goal to shoot for, for a complete novice.

And congratulations to all who passed!

I guess this depends on how businesses in Japan will view it. Wink
In any case, when there's JLPT 1, why settle for less?

Zanzou was not suggesting that other people will be impressed by your having passed JLPT3, but that test-takers themselves who think JLPT3 is a joke might be humbled by the experience of taking the test and doing worse than they anticipated. Note the sentence that follows the one you responded to.

(drum roll) JLPT RESULTS! - skellyfish - 2010-02-04

I passed 1級 with 296/400 (74%) overall!

I was worried because the double-picture question threw me off during the listening test, and that's usually my strongest section (~90-95%). As expected, I had a lower score of 80% for listening, but luckily I was able to pull out a decent enough combination of reading/grammar/kanji/vocab to eke out a pass.

Anyone think it's masochistic to try again for a higher score over the summer? Do employers ever care about your exact score, or do they just want to see a pass? Would it be better to go for the 漢字検定 next?

(drum roll) JLPT RESULTS! - vosmiura - 2010-02-04

I just squeaked a pass on 2級 with 60.25%. Result is quite low compared to what I was getting on past mock tests, but I guess it kind of reflects how much vocab I learned more than anything.

(drum roll) JLPT RESULTS! - ta12121 - 2010-02-04

JLPT and kanji kanzen eh and kanji kentai. So much tests.... This might seem like a noobish question, but what is kanji kanzen?

(drum roll) JLPT RESULTS! - vosmiura - 2010-02-04

I guess you mean Kanji Kentei, which gets shortened to KanKen?

(drum roll) JLPT RESULTS! - uberstuber - 2010-02-04

Passed 1級 with 75%
Was hoping to score higher but whatevs.

(drum roll) JLPT RESULTS! - ta12121 - 2010-02-04

@vosumiura
That's probably it. So there's JLPT tests, and then kanji kentai, which i think has 10 levels or so.

(drum roll) JLPT RESULTS! - Womacks23 - 2010-02-04

There's also the BJT. Testing business Japanese.

But employers care most about your speaking ability. 1級 looks great on the resume and can make the difference if you get an interview or not but if you can't speak well you have no chance of getting a job.
