Shinjuku Street Life and Matador for MSC stuff. Kan alone makes it worth finding those albums, he outshines everyone--he's like the Japanese Big Pun lol.

Thanks for the recs, Ill check those out. Ill probably check out the rest of Kan's album as well.

O2's album is average, but has some amazing tracks on there.

Taboo's album is the best produced.

Kan's album is the most well-rounded, his new mixtape Murderation is really really good too.

Cool, Ill definitely check out the Kan one and the MSC group ones first. Then the O2 and Taboo ones. Thanks for the recs yall!

O2 album is solid, the opening track was the standout for me. 漢's album is very good, the Big Pun similarity is accurate, he raps very fast like Pun. Lot of tracks I liked on there, though man that Kan and Maki the Magic track is just straight adrenaline. Haven't listened to Taboo's album or the MSC ones yet. But I'll get to them eventually.

KREVA Wrote:@kurohachi: I got the feeling you and Realism have been referring to my buddy Lajauge's livejournal. He's got a lot of 90s hip-hop on his blog. I'm referring to the private blog "J-Urban Sounds" that I created specifically for Japanese Hip-Hop fans of the RevTK/Japanese learning community.

http://jurbansounds.blogspot.com/

The albums you requested have been on our blog for a few years now.
Man. I created this thread 3 years ago.

It's crazy that even JUrbanSounds has been out for years.

I'm finally getting into the swing of my Japanese studies. Can't wait to actually understand these tracks without having to look up every word. I miss lyricz.info.

Pepcee - Boom Shot EP

This is the best mixtape I've heard so far. It's ridiculously good. Great relaxing beats, good rapper. If you want something to chill and smoke to this is a good one. I'm really impressed by the production, it's a that jazzy/abstract groove, I love it. I really want to purchase it just for the cover alone...don't know where I can find an actual copy though

And of course it's free for download on the artist's website.

Yeah 街道14 is the first Japanese rap song I've ever heard, I was just blown away. I had no idea their hip-hop sounds like that lol.

But I remember songs #5 and 6 were really atrocious though...kinda ruined the album for me.

Dope Japanese Hip-Hop - kurohachi - 2013-09-04

@Realism and crispy - That Taboo1 solo is straight fire, he is not a great rapper like Kan and Primal, but man theres crazy heat on there moreso on the production especially Rockin a Pocket. That song is just bonkers. Maki the Magic production is becoming a favorite of mine, the nuances (that needle scratch on the 2nd verse) and layering in his productions on the MSCrelated albums are great to me. I heard the Shinjuku Street Life, its dope too. Going to check out Matador soon.

Just heard Jet Stream Salmon, DEJI is becoming one ofmy favorite MCs.

@vgambit Im glad you made this thread, it really made me realize how dope Japanese hip hop can be. Honestly, ive been listening J rap more than anything else now. It has helped me study my Japanese (which is still poor on vocab retention) and exams for work-related certifications. You and other contributers to this thread have my appreciation and gratitude for that.

Dope Japanese Hip-Hop - vgambit - 2013-09-04

I had no idea this thread would blow up like this, or stick around for so long. I recently went through all the posts since the last time I checked it, and added a bunch of songs that were mentioned to that playlist in the OP. If I'm able to, I'll try to get some parity between that YouTube playlist and my iPhone's playlist, but at this point, you guys are introducing me to much more j-rap than the other way around.

I just started learning vocab (waiting until I finish RtK is a fool's game), and one of the words that came up was shusshin. I immediately thought of that one line in the T.A.K. the Rhymehead track on the album Zoku Akumyou, where he goes "Toukyou shusshin." It means origin, or come from, so "Toukyou shusshin" means "I'm from Tokyo."

Another word was "yume," and I immediately thought of Yume and Yume -remix- by Naked Artz. It means "dream."

Matador isn't that good compared to Shinjuku Street Life but the title track is probably the best song they ever made.

As far as all the Libra albums go, I'd have to say Axis' solo Uncivilized is the best out of all of them just from a production standpoint, if you thought Taboo1 had good beats wait till you hear Uncivilized.

The best overall albums are Primal's Proletariat and Mega-G's Juswanna is Dead, the latter one is personal classic to me.

Heck yea, "Yume" by Naked Artz is a classic. I actually heard the original first, and thought it was amazing. Then I heard the remix on the Shintou album, and now I don't know which one I like better. The tempo of the beat is different on both, but equally amazing to me.

Listening to music in a different language is the best way to learn (or reinforce what you learn) I think. I knew Japanese words "gibusu", "tsumi", "shun", etc just from listening to Shiina Ringo back when I was in college. And nowadays I try to look at the lyrics booklet that came with my Naked Artz "Shintou" and Scha Dara Parr "5th Wheel 2 the Coach" CDs as a way of studying even more. This is kinda why I wish itunes or amazon mp3 had lyric booklets in pdf forms for more albums, 'cause I really wish I had lyric booklets of the other J rap albums I have. Additionally, Japanese CDs are not cheap though the yen being around 100 to the dollar does help now.

Nevertheless, it's a slow learning process with me despite listening to J rap everyday. That being said, in due time and constant practice it'll become easier. I haven't tried RtK at all, though I guess I should haha.

I'll check it out, haven't heard any of Axis' or Mega-G's stuff yet. Oddly enough, I find myself playing the Taboo1 album the most out of the MSC-related albums lately. Rockin' a Pocket is just incredible to me, once I hear that I just listen to the rest of the album (w/ the exception of City Dreamer, that's the only track I didn't like on the album, can't get with that beat at all).

Dope Japanese Hip-Hop - kurohachi - 2013-09-05

Taboo1 - Rock in a Pocket (for those who haven't heard it)

Deji - Attacking Dharma (from his Jet Stream Salmon album, it's on amazon mp3 and itunes)

Deji - Inaho pt. 2 (from his Heavyweight Tanks album, it's on amazon mp3 and itunes)

Roundsville - Station of Frontier (was trying to find the "Fast Lane" track on youtube but couldn't find it, I'd say this song below is 2nd favorite song of theirs after "Fast Lane", both songs are on itunes)

Muro - Mr. Pitiful 2006 (Prodigy w/ a brief cameo, Alchemist on the production, man I need to find this Tokyo Tribe album, can't find it anywhere)

Muro - J.P.N.

Muro (ft. Big-O, Suiken & Cashflow) - V.I.P.

Muro (ft T-Ace) - Trail Blazer (my most fave (along w/ Tribe Life) from what I've heard from Tokyo Tribe 2

Zimback "Soul Brother" is an amazing album, straight up. "Night Ride" is incredible, 16Flip is such a dope producer reminds me of Madlib.

Dope Japanese Hip-Hop - kurohachi - 2013-09-15

Heard a few tracks of Osumi's "Control (The Spiritual Matters)", sounds really dope. Got to find that album. As well as the last Kierumakyuu ones.

1. Soul Scream "The Deep"
2. Naked Artz "浸透-Penetration"
3. Rhymester "Egotopia"
4. キング・ギドラ "空からの力"
5. Scha Dara Parr "5th Wheel 2 the Coach"

仙人掌's album "Be in One's Element" is fantastic.

Dope Japanese Hip-Hop - Realism - 2013-09-22

Just heard DJ Perro's Filters album....pretty disappointing, it's not bad but my expectations were way too high, a lot of his beats on the album sound like throwaway beats, which is strange considering it's his own album.

But the best track is the song Given Power with Taboo1, it's a remix of Nas' I Gave you Power and it's really good.

Dope Japanese Hip-Hop - s0apgun - 2013-09-22

THE OTOGIBANASHI'S "Fountain Mountain"

Dope Japanese Hip-Hop - Realism - 2013-09-23

Man, I just realized Zeebra from 95-99 was the best Japanese rapper ever. After that it was all downhill.

During that time he's as good as anyone in the US.

Dope Japanese Hip-Hop - kurohachi - 2013-09-26

Finally heard that KillahBeen album, man it is fantastic. Took me a while to find it, but im glad I did. "Parallel" is a flatout masterpiece. I definitely like how it sounds sonically, lots of sounds incorporated into the songs. Plus KillahBeen has a great flow, sounds like he can rap for days if he wanted.

I also liked the 5slack 5sense album as well. Definitely has a Stones Throw feel to it.

Yea, Zeebra has a great voice for rapping, just gruff with great cadence.

Nice.

Japan really has the best female MCs I've ever heard.

There's like 3-4 of them at least.

Dope Japanese Hip-Hop - kurohachi - 2013-10-02

Definitely agree w/ Japanese female rappers, just Coma-Chi alone is great on the mic when she raps.
That new Dinary Delta Force is just fire, man. Had that album in constant rotation all this week.

Dope Japanese Hip-Hop - yurayura - 2013-10-10

Yes, so glad I found this thread. I've been on a japanese hip hop thing for a while. Gonna check out all the recommendations on this thread. Cheers
