It is now my firm belief that there is no point trying to review kanji when you're tired, slightly ill and hot and sweaty...

Yes, for me it can account for 5% vs. 50% failure rate difference. I can start reviewing late at night, get 50% wrong, stop half-way and review the rest in the morning with just a few errors.
