Frequency list for kanji in names?? - Lozza - 2010-01-16

Does anyone know of a frequency list for kanji appearing in Japanese names?

If not the next best thing would be a list of popular Japanese names ordered by frequency.

A list of kanji appearing in place names would also be interesting.

Legal names are restricted to the 常用 and 人名用 lists, so if you learn those, you have them all.

They total around 3k characters, so it's not even very many.

That would still leave some place names with 表外字 like that one
<<<-----------------------------
but by the time you learn 3k+, it shouldn't be a problem to learn them as you meet them.

Some dictionaries have a list of the 100 most common surnames, so you might be able to find a list on the Internet somewhere but I don't know where offhand.

Not sure if it's any help but there's a public Mnemosyne deck that claims to contain the top 500 Japanese surnames:

9,000 surnames is some serious overkill. Even a Japanese school teacher will never come across anywhere near that many different names in a 30 year career.

I agree,I'm just making it so it can be accessible to everyone. I definitely know that, it's probably best to aim for 1000 most common names. To get a good use out of it. (When I think of English names, I don't know 1000's and 1000's of names. It's just encounter/learn them as we go.) So eventually I'll apply to japanese as well
