After doing some research, I went ahead and ordered one for around $200. It's shipping from Europe so it could be a while, but I'll weigh in once I get to use it for a few days.

There are aptitude tests that the military uses to say if you're even worth bothering putting into a class (or the military at all) but that's about it. He probably took the DLAB (Defense Language Aptitude Battery) that let him into the DLI (Defense Language Institute). In there, he'll still have 56 weeks or more of training which also will mean a high attrition rate.
@ZerOrange, just be careful. It is a wireless transmission device. Depending on the security rating of your area, that could be a punishable offense though I'm sure you're being careful about that. Even then, you're likely disobeying a direct order even if you're doing it for the right reasons.
And good skills in your endeavor. Keep us informed if they like your self study techniques. I tried to pass on to a guy or two at the DLI the stuff we were doing, but I doubt it went anywhere.

Kidding aside, I'm in a sort of limbo, where I'm far ahead of my class, but perhaps still not at DLPT standards (although I suspect that in a month or two that will no longer be the case). However, no matter how boring my classes are, it would be better staying put for the year that I have left than graduating early and going do my actual job.

The general feeling is that they'd rather have a student diligently struggling along with the course than someone like myself.

There are some good guys here, but for the most part it is about getting good at taking DLPT, not actually learning the language. (My class leader is a 2 in Korean and Thai but he can't speak either beyond the basics.)
