surprised no one has mentioned nasu dengaku!

Melt in your mouth goodness with sweetness, sake-ness, miso-ness, saltiness, umami-ness, YUM!

and http://closetcooking.blogspot.com/2007/08/nasu-dengaku-eggplant-broiled-in-miso.html
(No it isn't my blog, although I live in Toronto and love Japanese food, too.)

Edited to include pictures.

寿司皆さん? lol I haven't really eaten any other different types of Japanese foods, mostly because I'm mostly studying japanese and learning it daily rather than eating it daily.

Surprisingly I am a big fan of my schools 給食! 肉じゃが、しょうが、カレー、鮭、on and on. It all tastes really good around 1240 when the hunger monster strikes. Even these ika rings!

I'm a big fan of the 味噌チャーシュー they sell at the Hokkaido-style ramen shop down the street from my dorm. I don't know exactly what it is they do differently, but it's just leagues above all the other places I've tried. Maybe it's the spicy ground beef paste-like stuff they put on top.

There's also a mom-and-pop 焼肉 place I like to go to that costs 1980円 for a two hour 食べ放題. Cheap, and the meat is rather good quality with nice, big cuts. 焼肉一番, indeed.

They're not mutually exclusive, dude.

I love 笊蕎麦 (ざるそば)and just about anything made with 湯葉 (ゆば). Also, the Japanese make really good ice cream.

雪見だいふく ftw

Oh yeah, since someone earlier asked about it, cookpad.com is the most popular source for recipes in Japan. They have an iPhone app too.

Mmm, しょうが焼き, I love it. My girlfriend can make it really well, even in Sweden (Swedish meat doesn't really work in Japanese food, we never cut it that thin).

You can't really buy shabushabu (for shougayaki) meat in Canada either without going to Chinatown or maybe a butcher.

I was actually going to make shougayaki tomorrow for lunch with meat leftover from my nikujaga..

In terms of things that cost less than 15 bucks, my favorite Japanese food is probably nabeyaki udon. I love my なべ in general, as my avatar attests.

Here's the Cooking With Dog recipe. It's a really great youtube channel for Japanese cooking.

I don't really have a favorite.
I love: ちゃんぽん、カツ丼、親子丼、寿司、お好み焼き、たこ焼き、お鍋、シャブシャブ、神戸牛肉、すき焼き、牛丼、とんかつ、お茶漬け・・・・

Yeah! Mmm, matcha ice cream. Big Grin

Matcha's really good in smoothies, too. Smile

Pocky tastes like sawdust.. The only reason people import it is cause it's Japanese and it appears in lots of anime.

If I had to choose between stick-based snack foods, I'd go with Toppo over Pocky any day. I mean, chocolate on the outside? How quaint.

So true, no one seriously likes that. When I lived in Japan, NO ONE bought it. In Sweden though, everyone who studies Japanese wants it. Really odd, especially since Fran which is more or less the same thing, tastes MUCH better.

Why would people be all crazy about Pocky (never ate it myself) when there's tasty Japanese food perfectly available?

what's your favourite japanese food? - nest0r - 2010-01-11

I don't know, I'm a fan of the Strawberry Pocky, regardless of its cultural status as similar to the General Tso's Chicken of Japanese 'candy'. Haven't tried the other kinds, though.

I prefer Yan-Yans myself. They are good even without dip!

For me it's kinda hard to have a favorite Japanese food, since I've eaten so many and enjoyed *most* of them. Right now I'm definitely craving Okonomiyaki. I feel like making some, but I also feel too lazy to make my own dashi...

ポッキ and others of its ilk suffer from the fact that Japanese chocolate sucks. Fortunately, Snickers are widely available and have saved my snackin' ass more than once. Oh wait, the topic is Japanese food, not food in Japan. 後免.

Rice! I love Japanese rice. So many subtle flavor variations, all delicious. And 鮭お握り, yummmm....

It's all about Strawberry flavour. Plus don't forget 'Giant Pocky':

The 巨大-ness makes it good Smile

Somehow that is phallic.. maybe it's the pink color.

what's your favourite japanese food? - Rekkusu - 2010-01-12

If they interchanged the strawberry part with the plain part.... yea...... :/

Depends on the crowd you hang with. I know a bunch of 1-3 graders and they have it tucked away in their lunches typically. Maybe it is a regional thing?
