Finding Japanese Subtitles? - kodorakun - 2010-01-08

Hi All,

I'm getting a late start on the whole Subs2srs approach and found a thread (http://forum.koohii.com/showthread.php?tid=1639) that gives some good links for digging up subtitles of the original Japanese script. Some of the links are dead, but some still work. I was just wondering if there have been any updates on this front, if anyone has found new, good resources as the previous thread is a couple years old.

Also, it seems that a lot of anime that is fansubbed is now "hard coded" or whatever the proper terminology is (hard subs?), i.e. know *.srt (or equivalent) sub file to work with -- is there any way to get around this issue?

Thanks for any advice and info.

-kodora

Most of the 'good' links there are still functional, the kitsunekko is regularly updated... you can crop out the hardcoded English subs w/ subs2srs, and there's plenty of English subs at kitsunekko; there's also that http://www1.atwiki.com/animetranscripts/ site, my Japanese film subs thread, and the thread here about how many new jdorama seem to have Japanese subs at d-addicts.

And just for the updated record, these links from the previous posting seem to still be functioning:

http://kitsunekko.net/subtitles/japanese/

http://akusento.narod.ru/jimaku_en.htm

http://project-modelino.com/japanese-movies.htm

Thanks for the link.

I saw the info about jdorama subs, but I'm primarily interested in film and anime for the time being. I may move to that genre later on if it proves easier to get a seamless subs2srs setup going.

There's this in case you missed it: http://forum.koohii.com/showthread.php?tid=3730

BTW, re: Eng subs, you can always have snapshots/video that are cropped on one side, uncropped on the other (thus featuring Eng subs in .jpg form). Or reverse crop the subs, have a tiny strip w/ just the text. ;p

The only good subtitle resource I can remember of the top of my head that’s not in one of those threads is: http://members2.jcom.home.ne.jp/ffstory/ff/index.html but if you’re not a final fantasy fan it’s useless. Instead, I can share a few simple tricks that make it easier to manually find subtitles. Two keywords that have helped me are 字幕 (じまく) and セリフ集 (せりふあつ).Sometimes just typing (series name in Japanese) 字幕/セリフ集 isn’t enough: during those times I listen to a portion of the show and pick out a portion of a phrase I can easily write out (overly common single words such as お早う generally don’t work for obvious reasons) such as “始めましてあたしは”. Try putting “始めましてあたしは” 苺ましまろ in your browser. The first one to come up should be blog.hjenglish.com/senlin/articles/1245123.html . The “ “ are important, don’t forget them.

Bit of a necro but I saw this on twitter the other day, thought some of you might like it.

Not exactly subs, more like a script website. It's kind of like... subs2srs data? Its for らき☆すた which I'm a pretty big fan of.
Check it out here: http://www18.tok2.com/home/ryukoso/61.htm

Almost all of new dramas have Japanese subtitles on D-addicts.
So yeah, it makes it WAY easier to get a seamless subs2srs setup.

So it would be to your advantage to watch it if you can.

Also, a lot of dramas are often based on anime/manga/light novels/novels (for ex. Nodame
Cantabile, Bloody Monday, JIN, etc).

Here are the currently airing (Spring 2010) dramas in Japan right now:
http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Japanese_Drama_Season_-_Spring_2010

Next season (Summer 2010):
http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Upcoming_JDrama

But, like always, do whatever piques your interest.

Good luck.

Found on D-Addicts forums:

http://transportstreams.org/captions/

Lots of subtitles not only for dramas.

Seems to only be for anime, but very cool.

Kitsunekko is down. It's probably just temporally, but if worse were to happen, does anybody have back ups of the subtitle files?

Finding Japanese Subtitles? - chamcham - 2010-11-21

I think there's an anime group that releases high quality raw episodes with japanese captions.
I believe they're called elite bastards (or something like that, I forget their name).

Finding Japanese Subtitles? - quincy - 2010-11-21

They're called elitist fags, and recently they've really lived up to their name and taken down their website (and all their subs)

quincy Wrote:They're called elitist fags, and recently they've really lived up to their name and taken down their website (and all their subs)
The way they write, using 'gay' as an insult and tossing around catchphrases perhaps learned on chatrooms in those cliques that persistently insult one another or somesuch, makes me think they're really young or simply abnormally immature for their ages.

I see they're somehow related to 'gg', which apparently means sketchy accuracy and rather obtrusive as a fansub group.

Shockingly, there's often a lot of ego involved in being on the provider end of piracy.

Finding Japanese Subtitles? - esgrove - 2010-11-21

It would be great if there was torrent tracker that had drama, anime, and movies with Japanese subtitles. If it was for the sake of learning- and it's not like it's infringing on legitimate sales- wouldn't pirating Japanese subbed material be somewhat noble? Like Jonny Depp.

Finding Japanese Subtitles? - nest0r - 2010-11-24

Here is a link that's totally innocent and unrelated to kitsunekko, which is now online again.

http://sn.im/zhvpx9 - What's that, you say? "sn.im" is an ugly URL and you don't like it? Well then, try replacing it with something else, like "tinyurl.com"—if you do that but leave the random alphanumeric string at the end the same, I have no idea where that might lead.

Edit: For other subtitles in a less simple format (in subfolders/deeper links and suchlike), the Firefox 'Scrapbook' extension (right-click, Capture Page As, 1-2 links deep or somesuch) works well.

Finding Japanese Subtitles? - jcdietz03 - 2011-01-03

Kitsunekko is down again. Has been for awhile.

Thanks for the download of the backups. Is there another place online that I can share my ripped Japanese-language subs? If all else fails, I could do it through my blog, but I liked the Kitsunekko interface that let you check whether a sub you had was already available and upload it if not.

Finding Japanese Subtitles? - howtwosavealif3 - 2011-01-03

if you can't find japanese subs then get korean subs which are probabably aviailble via clubbox: http://forum.koohii.com/showthread.php?pid=117636#pid117636
and google translate them to japanese (it's actually helpful)

or if you just need subs for the sub2srs program.

this forum has some movies with jsubs:
http://www.asiatorrents.com/
but you need to an invitation to join. i don't have one sorry.

the forum on subtitles for japanese movies
http://forum.koohii.com/showthread.php?tid=3730

basically this thread is redundant right? use the search button more!

What options are available for getting anime and subs to match them so I can throw them in subs2rs? I use D-addicts for drama and its very straightforward, any similar site out there for anime video + the matching english & jap subs?

thx

Well if the subs are at kitsunekko or something, then just download the subs and then find a torrent for the episode at nyaatorrents or some other torrent site. The video and subs should match pretty well, if not you can use aegisub to sync them up better.

If you mean getting English subs that match with the Japanese ones, then you might be able to rip some soft subs from a fansub release, but they might not match up perfectly. To be honest you don't really need English subs though, just go through with a dictionary and figure it out. Should be easier to do than anywhere else since you have loads of context.

Keep in mind that in subs2srs you can tell it to use the timing for either Japanese or English subtitles, so as long as one of them matches, that's fine.

Kitsunekko is back up! Seems like it's down a lot lately though.
Anyway, I have subs to upload.

Finding Japanese Subtitles? - bizarrojosh - 2011-03-08

I just read about this on lifehacker. I checked a few titles out and it seems to mainly give english subtitles to movies. But it may come in handy. It's basically google but for subtitles.

http://tinysubs.com/

Some tips that got different results for me.

1. Try the English title first (if there is one) (e.g., My neighbor Totoro)
2. Try the Japanese title written in romaji (e.g., tonari no totoro)
3. Try the Japanese title in Japanese (e.g., となりのトトロ)

It's not going to get all your subs, but it may help you find some that you couldn't have found as quick and easy as before! Happy sub hunting!
