Hey,
So I have put a star next to some of the really good stories I find on this site, I also sometimes find it quite funny when I see the number of times a story has been reported...then I got to this page: http://kanji.koohii.com/study/kanji/584
I burst out laughing at how many reports they got...anybody else do this? It's actually helping me to enjoy the studying :p Anybody else found this funny?

The funniest stories definitely make it easier to remember. It may be offensive sometimes, but it's for use in your own head really. If you don't find it offensive personally, go for it.

Ahh, the hilarity and futility of political correctness...
And let's just say that even I'm grossed out by the mnemonic I chose for "clap", and I'm generally difficult to offend - but you can be sure that it's not a kanji I'll ever forget how to write.

Actually, I've hit the report button more than a few times by accident.
It often happens to me on my touchscreen cellphone. The report button is so close to the copy&paste and favorites buttons that it's too easy to make a mistake.

I remember there was a story for 'floating' http://kanji.koohii.com/study/kanji/floating that got a bunch of reports. It's a good story Heisig-wise, but a disturbing image indeed

Does reporting a story even accomplish anything? Honestly I don't get it either. It's not like a report is the same thing as a downvote, and I've never gotten an email from any mods for the stories of mine that get reported. In the spirit Heisig lays down in his famous introduction, I should think that a report should be considered about the same thing as a star vote, but then again there are stories that get reported which honestly have no relevance to the kanji.

I'm guilty of reporting a few stories accidentally, when my intentions was to copy the story. If you click just one pixel to the left of the copy-button, it gets reported instead. It wasn't until much later I noticed that I just had to click again to "un-report".

mezbup's using 2 fires to mean "twice as hot". I think that's fair enough.
I don't see why he would have to force the word inflammation into that story.
In fact, you could probably use "twice as hot" in the story for inflammation.
Although it's up to you to interpret the wet part (either wet, as in water being splash onto them while they are in bikinis on the beach, or the other type of wet......hehe....LOL..... :-)

I treat the warning button as a warning that the story is not a good mnemonic and/or if it contains too many words that are also primitives but don't belong in the kanji. I've stuck with the Heisig stories for everything that has a story in the book so I never saw that one for inflammation. It is funny, but I agree that it's not very effective. I would also mark that as a warning since it provides no way to associate the word "inflammation" with the statement about thin girls. It could maybe be fixed by adding in something about an inflammation in his pants, but after a while all of the stories about erections kind of blend together and lose their effectiveness so I try to avoid them.
I also put a warning on almost any story that follows the pattern "A <keyword> is next to a <primitive> on a <primitive>." Amazingly there are a few of these that have really high ratings associated with them, as if somehow memorizing 2000 different stories about random objects being next to other random objects was easier than just memorizing 2000 kanji shapes!

It seems the reports are pretty meaningless at the moment, since people report for different reasons and sometimes by accident. Maybe instead of one-click reporting, it would work better if clicking the button asked you to choose a reason, such as "misleading", "offensive", "copyright infringement", as well as having a cancel option. Then it might be possible to use the report counts for a few things.

I'd downvote some if that were possible, but it's not.

And it would also be good if a report downgraded a story, so the top stories that aren't really the best can also go down again.

I sometimes reported if it was blindingly obvious a primitive had been mistaken for another one or the mnemonic seemed to actually have 0 (or close to it) to the kanji.
In reality a mnemonic works however you can make it work for you. Stuff that's funny/perverted seems to work really well for some reason and using the words "twice as hot" to convey the fact that there is two fires works just aswell as saying "inflammation". It's not like 100% of the work is done by the mnemonic as you're also leaving part of the remembering up to what you visually see. I trust it has worked well for quite a few
IMO so long as you can see how the mnemonic would work to aid you in remember all of the pieces (despite not being "pure" to the keywords) then it's absolutely fine. It only needs to do it's job.

And (aside from objectionable content) if I go to use a story that has been reported, I'll double check it for these mistakes and/or confusing elements used. Other's reporting this way has saved me an awkward bit of 'unlearning' a couple of times.
On a side note: I find it very helpful when people point out Heisig's errors or some irregular stroke orders, so I star these stories to help others. And I try to highlight any that aren't already detailed in my own stories.
