Got an R4 for my DS for christmas. Wanted one for a while now and now that I finally have it I can't put my DS down. I have about 40 - 50 Roms on it now I think, so much cool stuff like practically every "kentei" game you can find haha. I also put kanji sono mama and kanken DS3 on it aswell so now I don't have to switch cartridges when I want to use those softs. Really looking foward to playing through FFIII once i'm done with FFVIII! Also found a Rosario to Vampire game! The show was a trashy harem (つまり、パンチラでいっぱいあるアニメです) but I enjoyed the first season (second was real gay) and i'm finding that the game is really easy for me to read and understand whilst giving me new words to learn too. Games like that are easy to pick up for 15mins here and there and are loads of fun if you like them.

Found a rom for the 英検 and took 1級 on that. Made me feel kinda smart passing first time with about 90% Tongue Quite hard though! Makes me realise how danm good your comprehension has to be to actually score well in those kind of tests. It was an eye opener of sorts.

Bimijo Training (美文字トレーニング) is a WICKED DS App (game? soft?) that is all about analyzing the way you write your characters and giving you full blown summary of where you went wrong and why. It's amazing.

Aside from that I have a couple of 日本語検定 games which I haven't delved too deeply into yet but they should be good. I have played around with a couple and they are actually pretty cool.

Neat history games like 日本史DS aswell as history titles specific to the 江戸時代.

Lets not forget cooking mama 3.

Anyways, anyone else have an R4 (or similar) and can share a few recommendations? 著作権侵害大好き!

Please consider adding game recommendations and reviews to the Kanji Games for the Nintendo DS thread.

Everyone is welcome as well to contribute to the Kanji Games on the Nintendo DS wiki page at RtkWiki (you will need to register, I recommend using your forum username). We could have a big table with pro and cons of each game, or just a link to a YouTube vid of each game (just ideas).

PS: noticed it was an "orphaned" page so added link under Software > Games on the wiki home page.

Why buy an R4? it's very out of date (no SDHC, no DSi support) and no longer supported by the manufacturer (no new firmware to address problems with newer carts)...

Loving My R4 - quincy - 2009-12-27

Yeah, I wouldn't by an R4 anymore, but it's still possible to get it to work with all currently released games with YSmenu

Loving My R4 - Jarvik7 - 2009-12-27

Yeah, but honestly YSmenu's UI is incredibly laggy (=annoying).

I have an R4 right now and it's passable enough to not tempt me to replace it (yet), but I wouldn't buy another R4 if it broke or I lost it.

Piracy is the greatest thing to happen to language immersion Tongue A little copyright violation is a small price (?!) to pay for infinite study materials if you ask me. I love my R4 too, dated as it may be by today's standards.
I also recently acquired a PSP which I promptly hacked, and is quickly becoming my new favorite study tool.

You may be interested in checking out NDSRS or Anki DS Sync as far as homebrew applications go. Simple and to the point SRS goodness on the DS.

Loving My R4 - mezbup - 2009-12-27

It's an R4i Gold so one of the knock off clone ones which supports SDHC and DSi. Haven't had any problems with it at all.

I have a cycloneDS cart, but don't use it much since I have to buy each and every app/game I play. Too much guilt, since I write software too and enjoy getting paid for my work Smile

Any M3 Real users here? I'd like to know your thoughts on it Smile

I had an M3 Real and a M3 Simply. The Real was much better in terms of interface, etc. Especially if you put the Sakura firmware on it.

But why not go for an M3i and have the ability to use it on the DSi?

Loving My R4 - Floatingweed5 - 2009-12-28

Good place to start...

Not been updated for a while, though.

I have an Acekard 2.1, I got it from dealextreme.com for 11$ I think..

works like a charm Smile

if you can afford it being slightly more than all the other cards, and don't have a DSi, the CycloDS is by far the best one I've ever used, and I've seen many of them.

If you are smart enough to hack stuff, you are smart enough to know that taking things for free is wrong when people have worked to create them and are trying to sell the results of their labor.

One of the distinguishing aspects of our society has been that we try to play fair. If you look askance at other societies where people are always trying to cheat each other, well, your society will become just like that if you value simply getting stuff for yourself over being honest and not cheating.

Would you sneak into a movie theater without paying? If not, then you can be mature enough to buy the things you want, or wait until you have the money. That's the deal, and if you don't follow it, you're cheating, and you really should be ashamed that you think your wants are more important than your self-respect.

On the other hand, the 'things' they are talking about here aren't even available in our half of the world. To pay for them, we have to go to greater lengths than should be required. When these companies decide that we are a market worth pursuing, they'll get more sales.

Or maybe they've already decided that it would cost them more than it would gain to enter this market... If that's the case, they've already given up on us and are just thankful for what they DO get.

The games I really enjoy and use I buy. The rest weren't worth the money in the first place.

As far as I know, the M3i is the only one that works on the DSi yet. There may be others that I haven't heard of, though.

Loving My R4 - Hashiriya - 2009-12-28

R4 works on DSi... they make a model especially made for it (i can confirm it works)

I write software too, but I write open source so I just see it as me teaching them how it should be done.

Do you know of any UK or european websites that sell it? Other than the one I mentioned.

Loving My R4 - Hashiriya - 2009-12-28

Loving My R4 - Rina - 2009-12-28

You cannot play Chinese games unless you have a Chinese DS (iQue) afaik.

Loving My R4 - thorstenu - 2009-12-28

I bought a DS + Cyclos just for Japanese learning purposes and lost a lot of time by playing various English games on it :/

I spent a lot of time searching for Japanese language related stuff, check out my post here: http://forum.koohii.com/showthread.php?pid=58332#pid58332

My personal favorite is: 1361_「うっかり」をなくそう!文章読みトレーニング 読みトレ

The best thing about it is it starts at a really low (JLPT3 i guess) level and you skill up each day.
