Dramas that don't take place in the modern day - delenir - 2009-12-22

Hi everyone. So I've been watching a lot of dorama lately, and I think it would be a nice change of pace to watch something that does not take place in the modern age. I've heard there are lots of samurai dorama, but after searching, all I can find it something called Samurai High School which does take place in the current age...

One of the newer ones that is being seeded quite well right now is JIN~仁~. You might wanna check it out. Also, 不毛地帯 isn't modern, but it's not quite what you might be looking for...

I second the recommendation for JIN. By 'samurai drama' I'm guessing you mean the historical dramas : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taiga_drama

You might want to check out Atsuhime (篤姫) and Toshiie and Matsu (利家とまつ) - I have not seen them, but one of my Japanese friends is really into historical drama and those are two of her favorites. She has also convinced me that I need to watch Jin - I think its last episode aired last week.

Wikipedia gives the first episode title for JIN as "時空を超えた愛と命の感動物語 ~現代の脳外科医が激動の幕末へ… 歴史の針が今、動き出す! 人は人でしか救えない!!" Now you don't get titles like that for English drama :-)

(How much samurai-talk [ie non-standard Japanese] is there in the typical taiga drama? I guess I could just watch one and find out...)

There's always Mito Kōmon if you like cheese ;-) (the shoutout to that in Edo Rocket was very funny.)

My favorite dramas are historical dramas. Not only taiga, even dramas taking place in showa era or WWII is considered to be historical.

These days I am watching Fumo Chitai. It is a good drama about a military leader captured by the Soviets during WWII. He was treated as a war criminal and sentenced to 25 years of labor in a harsh Siberian detention camp. After 11 years of imprisonment, he is released. He returns to Japan and begins readjusting to life as a civilian, rejecting an offer from his former colleague to work on a defense project. He has decided to never involve himself in war again, much to the joy of his family. Instead, he attempts to set off on a new path working at a major trading company.

Those type of dramas are called jidaigeki.

NHK is famous for its jidaigeki dramas.

This current season they have:

Saying that, does anyone know any dramas that are set in the future?

I think a drama set in the faraway future would be way over budget. But maybe something like Zettai Kareshi could qualify since it features future technology.

JIN is awesome. Everyone really needs to see it.

Although I think English subtitles (or whatever your native language is) are
almost mandatory for the less fluent.

Medical terminology + historical Edo-period japanese + scifi time-travel related vocab = DEATH

Taiga is the name of a specific series of dramas produced by NHK, not the genre. It's like referring to all teen sitcoms as "Saved by the Bells".

The word you are looking for is jidaigeki (時代劇, period drama) for historical dramas, and chanbara (チャンバラ, abbreviated onomatopoeia for swords clashing) for samurai dramas in particular.

There are tons of jidageki on tv every day. You won't find them on the internet since they are generally not very good. They are basically just soap operas set in a historical period. I'm actually watching one right now while doing anki reviews. The acting is very bad, the chonmage caps are clearly visible, and in one scene that had a floating maple leaf, they used what is obviously a car air freshener since I guess they couldn't find any natural red leaves due to the season of filming.

There was an extremely poorly acted korean jidaigeki running daily a few months ago. Dunno if it's still going.
