Did it really start that high? It a commonly used sales tactic to place the "recommended" price so people can see how much they aren't paying even though the never would have been made to pay that much at to begin with (unless they bought it from a thievin muther *&^%er).
I read somewhere that the price was set at around 95US so they may actually have charged that much.

When I looked it up, I had a choice of paying the $95+UPS to Play-Asia, or 8000yen+shipping+reshipping from Amazon.com. I figured I'd get it cheaper and faster from Play-Asia. I'm pretty sure there wasn't 2 versions of it on Amazon at that time.

Always remember, Final Fantasies are NEVER well received when they first come out. Look at X and X-2. X is now praised as the second coming of the series and X-2 is said to have one of the best battle systems yet. Both were endless bashed by people (not professional reviews) when they first came out.

Every FF evolves and many of the 'fans' can't deal with this. It causes them to strike out against anything they can find while they gnash their teeth, waiting to play the game that will save their retched existances. Want to know what the biggest complaints on GameFAQs are? No towns, and too linear. As people are now posting, since they've gotten far enough, there ARE towns, and it's NOT too linear.
The focus of the game is on the battle system this time, rather than the story and interactions. What that means is that the stuff you'll be doing 95% of the time is a lot more fun, at the expense of some of the fun of the rest of it.
Since you can now change roles in the middle of battle, it provides an entirely different kind of strategy. Instead of deciding your characters and their roles beforehand, equipping them to defeat a certain monster, and then praying for some luck... Now you prep your characters for everything, fight and change tactics as necessary in the heat of battle. FFX2 kind of supported something like this, but it was tedious and not nearly as useful and fun. No other game that I've seen has done it.

Nice find! It'll be fun to watch them after I beat the game.
Going back a bit, I finally got the game today (thank god it wasn't lost in the mail like I feared)! And in that scene (pretty much right at the beginning too!) I noticed that サッズ has the type of personality that doesn't want to fight so much and would rather run away. In the scene previously dsicussed, Lightning basically is blowing him off telling him to just stay there and watch. It comes in response to him complaining about having to fight the first hard enemy.

I got my FFXIII today. So far its been quite the challenge, constantly shifting from TV to PC translating as I go along. It takes me quite a long time to get through a scene considering that I write out all the dialog in a book.
Each time I finish a part of the game I replay it seeing how much I understand of it. Some parts are completely in Kana, which is really confusing; here's hoping that you guys can help on them:
１．さがれ
２．やってみやがれ
３．よこせ
These ones do have kanji but i have found them particularly difficult to translate:
１．そこんとこを聞かせて
２．なんでパージに歯向かってるか
３．父ちゃん 孤軍奮闘だあ
I think its because these sentences maybe a kind of slang. That might be the reason why I'm having trouble with them.

I think in the context this was used in (a battle, IIRC), it was more 'stand back/aside'. (下がれ in kanji)

One thing to remember especially in video games and the like is that the speech styles used by the characters are often somewhat stereotyped forms of speech that are used to delineate character and don't always mimic real life usage. So さがれ！ is very blunt and rude in most cases in real life, but if a video game character is using it, it might just mean that he's a brash teen, or significantly older than who he's talking to, or something like that, without necessarily indicating rudeness.

Edit: Nukemarine, I think you're spot on. (But no expert here, I looked it up :-) )
I was joking .... but as you say it's actually not so far removed from the word's meaning/origins. 歯向かう also written 刃向かう. Apparently comes from baring teeth 歯 (or brandishing a sword 刃) and confronting (向かう) an enemy. There's an eg sentence of a feral dog attacking. But more generally it's used for fighting back against a powerful entity or force. So it's used in the sense of opposing authority, etc. (though I suspect 反抗 is more common)
Any dictionary should help you sort out goofy translations, mastermx. Here's an entry for 歯向かう：
〔反抗する〕 raise a hand [rise (up)] against 《a dictator》; oppose;
offer resistance 《to…》; turn 《against [upon]…》; defy.
権力に刃向かう rise up against [resist] authority

Hey mastermx, why don't you give it a try, for one cutscene, just sitting back and watching it and testing how much you can get? I noticed that a lot of the times ways things are said and just listening to the flow of the conversation can clue one in on meanings. I did this a lot when I first started to watch movies and anime in Japanese only.
See if it helps any. Also, go into the menu and read up on the story, you can sit there and translate that as best you can, then you will have a lot more reference for weird words they throw out in conversation. (The first thing I did was read what the hell the ファルシ were lol)
P.S. - About 12 hours in now (I managed to sneak some time in to play with all this family visiting for the holidays), and I still absolutely love this game!
