Anki on the go - osakajin - 2009-12-21
So I want to make use of my commute time by studying using Anki. I am looking at getting an ipod touch and putting ianki on to it. But my computer doesn't have wireless internet. I guess there must be something I can buy to do that. Could someone tell me what that is called? And also what its called in Japanese? And if this is possible, am I right in guessing that I could synch my deck at home, review on the subway and come back and sunch again at home. i.e. that I don't have to always be connected to the internet to make ianki work.

I use an iphone with AnkiMini, and it's basically like the PC client of Anki. It saves a .anki file, and you can sync with the anki server. There shouldn't be any problem with syncing up at home, going about your day, then syncing again when you return. I do exactly this, except I have internet to sync outside too. Only difference is you'll have to remember to sync before you leave!
As far as price, functionality, etc. You can also get a netbook and do the same thing. I like my netbook for reviewing a lot better because it has furigana support, however I use my iphone more because it's with me 100% of the time.

Don't get iAnki, jailbreak your ipod (extremely easy, download blackra1n, start it, plug in your ipod, press a button. Done.) and then you can get AnkiMini which is awesome.

I use iAnki without any problems. What features am I missing? You can sync 1000 cards which is enough for 1-2 days. If you could sync audio and use plugins with AnkiMini though, then I would be interested.

osakajin to answer your question: you can add wireless capability to your PC in two ways..
1. get a wireless router to replace your current router... 無線ルーター
2. get a USB wireless adapter (USB無線アダプタ?) to plug directly into your PC.
Ideally, the first option is best, as your other device (e.g. iPod) can connect to the network as well.
An iPod touch is a good option, and either iAnki or preferably AnkiMini will allow Anki on the go. You are correct in thinking that you could sync your iPod at home (or anywhere with internet if you use AnkiMini), then study wherever you go and sync again to update the home version. No need for a constant internet connection.
