Anki recovery help please! - RisuMiso - 2009-12-19 Hello everyone. Today my mac died and now just has green vertical lines on it like the matrix. I'll have to get it fixed and hopefully my HD is still okay. I kept all of my anki decks synced online and figured I should be able to retrieve them from the online page and use my wife's computer for the time being... I couldn't see anyway of getting my decks off the online page though. I could share the deck but I think that would just give the cards, but not my spacing data. So I had the bright idea to try and just download the RTK1 deck to my wife's computer and have it sync with my online deck on open. I figured it would take the online info and make it match the fresh deck. It did the opposite and made both of them fresh decks. My sentence deck is still okay, but I figure if I just use it online I'll never be able to put it on a computer. So today I lost a computer and months of work on my RTK deck. If anyone knows any solutions to my deck recovery problem I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance. Anki recovery help please! - brandon7s - 2009-12-19 Ouch.. Well, at least your sentence deck is still intact. Sounds like you simply overwrote your original RTK1 deck though. Once you do that, I'm not sure if you can recover it, unless you have it backed up on a hard drive somewhere. Sounds to me like your HD for you mac should be fine. I'm not a mac guy, so I'm not sure if this is possibly without voiding the warranty, but if it was a PC you could simply take out the HD and stick it in an external hard-drive enclosure (which you can buy for $15) and recover the deck as if it was just a normal external hard-drive. That is, IF your hard drive is fine. My guess though, is that because it's a mac, you can't take it apart without voiding the warranty. I'll ask the developer if he backs them up on the server, which it probably does. What a bad move on my part. Panic leads to bad decisions. Yeah, unfortunately you can't really fix macs on your own and they cost a fortune to repair. I think it's some hardware problem related to video though, so I might be able to recover my info eventually. Anki recovery help please! - pm215 - 2009-12-19 Make sure it's clear to whoever is doing the repair that you want the hard drive contents. Occasionally you hear stories about repair places (usually big corporate ones) who just have a standard process that involves putting a clean disk image on everything that goes back out of the door, whether the fault was disk related or not. I'll have to see, but I have never got bad service anywhere in this country. Anki recovery help please! - Tobberoth - 2009-12-19 Man, it really sucks to loose an anki deck. Before, there was a bug in Anki on Windows which I ran into. If you waited too long to sync on a computer and then synced, it would take precedence and write over on the server. Well, I had been using Anki for ages on my Linux partition and my Mac. Then I went back to windows for the first time in ages and did a sync. WOW I was annoyed. Fortunately, my Linux deck was still fresh so I simply deleted the online one and uploaded my Linux deck as a new one. I might just use the extra time to do more sentences. Bad idea? This happening made me realize how dependent on technology this method is. It sucks when the technology fails and throws your studies out of orbit for a bit. I'd still do it over a traditional method any day though, even if I had to make all new decks. Anki recovery help please! - Katsuo - 2009-12-19 I would expect the HD is ok. If you have access to another Mac and have a FireWire lead to connect them, then you can easily get to the data. Details below: To transfer files using FireWire: 1. Shut down the faulty computer. Turn the other computer on. 2. Connect the two computers with a FireWire cable. 3. Start up the faulty computer while holding down the "T" key. ...a disk icon should appear on the desktop of the other computer. 4. Transfer files by dragging them to and from the disk. 5. Eject the disk by dragging its icon to the Trash. (While you drag, the Trash icon changes to an Eject icon.) 6. On the faulty computer, push the power button to shut it down, and then disconnect the FireWire cable. Anki recovery help please! - RisuMiso - 2009-12-19 Katsuo!! Thank you so much for that post! I'm using my wife's Mac, so I'll go buy a cable tomorrow and try that. You made my horrible day a little better! Here's some more info: A FireWire cable is likely to be known as an "IEEE 1394 ケーブル" in Japan. Also watch out for the connectors: it comes in 4, 6 and 9-pin versions (and typically in 1, 2, and 3 metre lengths). Check your Macs for which you need, and if in doubt take the model numbers to the store. In Yodobashi Camera the cables go for 2 to 3,000 yen depending on type. Anki recovery help please! - RisuMiso - 2009-12-19 The working computer (older macbook) just has a single port which looks like a 6 pin. The injured computer(early 2008 macbook pro) has the same port and a second one is a 9 pin now that I look at it closer. (square port). I think I'll be able to tell when I see them. Thanks for the extra info! Anki recovery help please! - RisuMiso - 2009-12-20 Katsuo, it worked like a charm. I even got to use my crappy Japanese ability at Bic camera and even learned about the different pins types some how. I'm really happy to have my decks back with spacing intact. Oddly they don't have any of the statistics for correct, time, etc. Maybe they are hidden in a different file? Either way I can live without that, I have what is important. Thanks again for the help! Time for me to play catch-up. |
