How do you set this up? I ran the installer, and then there was a screen with a checkbox and a button. I clicked the button, but I can't figure out what to do next. I don't see anything in the start menu, and nothing is running...

Have you used Microsofts IME before? You just use it the same way as that, Alt+Shift is how i activate IME, the first time I did it I was given a prompt to set google IME as my default.

Oh,ok. I didn't have my microsoft IME set to ctrl+shift, so I didn't notice it.

I tried the mac version but was instantly frustrated by not being able to press caps lock to switch to romaji, and hold shift to type katakana.
Anyone know if you can enable that?

Now works in 64 bit operating systems. Thanks for the thread bump to remind me!

That's standard behavior for MS IME, and in turn the Google IME. I like it too (the mac way), but I've only ever run into it on macs. I'm not sure if the custom keymapping can emulate the behavior accurately -- I glanced at it a bit but it doesn't appear to.

An all-around improvement as a Windows user, though, for sure.

If anybody has any bright ideas for customization do share.

I am Mac as well, and for now I have left kotoeri in place to allow me to force katakana with a shift, since I am writing a dictionary for my own use and need the Katakana for the 音読み。

(Did not know about Caps lock for romaji.)

One thing I have noticed about the google IME is that it is hundreds of times better with place names and people's names.

Also noticed that Using Shift for the first letter of a word (also known as capitalizing) lets "Me type the next few words in English” For instance, I am typing under the nominal Hiragana input right now, and yet English letters are displayed.

I remapped the right command and option keys to act like the eisuu and kana keys on a Japanese keyboard, so I've never messed with any of the clunkier IME shortcuts for western keyboard. I started learning Japanese on a Windows PC so I never got used to shift for katakana (on a Mac now of course).

That said, google's IME does give a LOT better results than kotoeri. My only problem is that it doesn't learn (at least when internet submission is turned off). I have to manually change my name to katakana with function keys every time, and dig through three screens of options before my girlfriend's kanji come up.

I turned off internet submission, since who tf wants a keylogger on their computer?

I use ATOK on the computer at work, and it is WAAAAY better than MS-IME, kotoeri, or Google. I'd use it at home too, but I'm not paying >$100 for an IME.

Much thanks for the hook up, nestor. In terms of speed, I compare this little tool to the browser of the the same corporation, FAST! I get no lag with this thing (sometimes I would with Mircosoft IME), but not with this. Also, the fact that it keeps tabs on patterns you've used in the past and has the google search suggestion function is rather convenient. I'm impressed! Big Grin

I switched back to Kotoeri after an anki/gtk based IME-crash while using Google's IME actually completely locked my mac up, requiring me to hard reboot via the power button.

I only wish I could get it to work, hehe. Every time I tried to type in Japanese with it, it crashed.

Guess I messed up here. I downloaded Google IME, set it as the default, changed the registry entry for Google IME "E0200411" to KBDDV.dll and rebooted but still no joy. Now both the Google and the MS IME are both in Qwerty and will not go to dvorak. Any ideas on what the mess up is?

System is XP version 2002 SP 3

Registry entries - E0200411
Default - not set
IME File - googleimeja.ime
Layout Display Name - @C:\WINDOWS\system32\GoogleIMEJa.ime,-101
Layout File - Kbddv.dll (changed from Kbdjpn.dll)
Layout Text - Google Japanese Input

Registry entries - E0010411
Default - not set
IME File - imjp81.ime
Layout Display Name - @%SystemRoot%\system32\input.dll, -5062
Layout File - Kbddv.dll (changed from Kbdjpn.dll)
Layout Text - Japanese Input System (MS-IME2002)

Any help will be appreciated

You need to change the registry entries for the IME(s) and Japanese. The registry entry for Japanese is 00000411 and should be in the same location as the IME's (source).

I actually wrote a post about this two years ago, and just had to find it again. I'm adding it to the wiki for those who still uses XP (might work for other Windows OS).

Edit: The post was even in response to one of your own posts where you wondered exactly the same thing. Guess you never saw it.

google's new japanese ime - Nukemarine - 2010-03-26

Pauline,

I saw that step two years ago in another thread. Not sure why but I guess the E000411 reverted back to Kbdjp.dll when I loaded up the Google IME. I forgot about checking it in addition to the the Google and MS IME.

This looks really cool, I'll have to try it out.

That is fantastic.

Thanks for this information!

I just installed it on Ubuntu and it works great! Big Grin

Apparently in December Google dropped the ‘beta’ label for their IME. I didn't think I had the non-beta, but I just remembered that I reinstalled the IME December 30 because it kept disappearing. It's worked great since then.

I couldn't get the fortune telling to work, per this article: http://asiajin.com/blog/2010/12/22/google-japanese-input-drops-beta-tag-does-even-fortun-telling/

Do you know how I can select a different keyboard layout? the preset is american i think, how would i change it to swiss?

google's new japanese ime - Tori-kun - 2011-04-27

@Jarvik: Concerning ATOK. It looks promising. Do you use it on your work on a windows pc? The website says, as far as I understood it, there is gonna be a 2011 premium edition in June.. Since I will get a laptop, my first by the way, soon, I am thinking of which OS to use. Usage of the laptop would be mainly for learning Japanese, learning in general.. wanna have some proper ime Tongue

google's new japanese ime - j_evenstar - 2012-06-17

Hello, I just recently discovered this and I was able to install this successfully. However, the kanji recognition does not work, I only see boxes. For instance, when typing にゅうりょく, all I see are boxes and I have to figure out which corresponds to 入力 since they're all boxes.

I am unable to install Microsoft Japanese IME since I get a notification says "This setup requires Office XP" and I do not have the Windows XP CD with me.

Does somebody know how to fix this? Thanks!
