2001.Kanji.Odyssey Thread gone? - chochajin - 2009-11-22

Hey there,

I saved a link to some comments in that old thread *points at title* - but the thread seems to have disappeared.
Some people were so nice and exlained to me how to successfully import a google document file into anki. I had huge problems back then.
So I clicked on the link and was told the thread doesn't exist anymore. I also tried to search for it, but couldn't find it.
Anybody knows if the thread still exists?
If not, could somebody be so nice and can explain one more time how to import google documents into anki?

I remember I had problems, so I had to use a few excel commands in order to get rid of them .... aaah!!!!!

Looks like zazen666 deleted it, too bad. Well, it was obsolete anyway, what with the other threads.

Here's the Wayback Machine version (looks like the server's under a heavy load at the moment, or something): http://web.archive.org/web/20080730052132/(BROKEN LINK) http://forum.koohii.com/viewtopic.php?id=918

Wow, didn't know there still existed something. But it doesn't load properly, so browsing through all the pages will take forever or might even be impossible.

If somebody still remembers how to import google spreadsheets into anki and could tell me one more time, that would be awesome. I'd make sure to save it offline this time.

It was something like going from .csv to .xls and some kind of command ... "=thin" or something?! while deleting some contents ?!?

I know that currently Fabrice cannot remove the side-effect of deleting a first post deletes the entire thread. So I have to ask, is there a way to disable the ability to delete posts all together? Yeah, deleting has uses, but this is the third or fourth major thread that's been deleted by the original poster for whatever reasons.

Kazelee or Fabrice locking a thread and/or editing (well, removing the text) of the offending post should suffice for thread control.

There were so many new threads about KO and that thread contained so many pages and much back-and-forth when we were doing the sentence project I saw little need to keep it and deleted it so it would not show up in new peoples' searches for KO info.

the way back deal is the way to go if you need that info

Fabrice, any chance you can restore this thread from the backups? It was a truly useful resource.

2001.Kanji.Odyssey Thread gone? - nest0r - 2009-11-22

Little bit of a faux pas there, zazen, what with it being such a large thread with many contributors. *Technically* you could delete all their posts without so much as a 'wham bam thank you ma'am', but *ethically* you are now worse than Hitler! ;p

So that means this thread is over, right? Forum faux pas aside:

My memory is fuzzy, was there any info in that thread that isn't more easily found in other threads?
1. Location of group project spreadsheet.
2. other?

If so, perhaps add it to the RevTK Wiki instead? We might be doing new folks a favour by not continuing to direct them to that unwieldy thread.

An owner of the books seeking access to the group project would likely access other 2001 lists with their conscience fairly intact. And there'd be no further need to identify and bug members of the group project for access. Or, those wanting that project to remain available could start a clean thread with clear instructions (which take into account the original contacts' wishes). My 2 cents.
[snip irrelevant]

Good idea, Goebbels. ;p Okay maybe I'm taking the comparisons too far now.

nah, more like the dope who states the obvious after the fact.

If what's done is done, then mundane reality's more practical than principles. Besides, I recall that you're more evolved than most and don't bother espousing principles on forums. ;-)
[edit: replaced my Goebbel comment - potentially offensive if misinterpreted]

My memory is fuzzy too, but I remember people's initial reactions to KO2001, before it became the entrenched standard reference it is now. Some experimentation with how best to use it. Commentary on how it was for the first people that used it, etc.

In short, historical context. Original, primary sources are important when forming your own opinion. Reading one, or two people's high level summaries of what happened, written long after the fact, is never the same.

Doh. Yes, there is an option to prevent members from deleting their own topics. I guess I couldn't find it before, I've just changed it:

Allow users in this group (Members) to delete their own posts => Yes (as before)
Allow users in this group (Members) to delete their own topics (including any replies). => No.

Was that the topic with a lot of copyright talk? That may explain why the topic starter deleted it. Still, I agree, when a lot of other members have contributed to a topic, this shouldn't happen.

As for the situation now, I'll take this opportunity to remind people we have a wiki. Certainly some of you are thinking "well Fabrice didn't even take time to put the logo" etc. I guarantee you this wiki isn't going away. I have a decent layout for the homepage in Photoshop, with a tentative organization of the sections, I'm just busy writing code, I didn't get around to "style" the wiki yet. When you have a topic that you bookmark and need to go back to after a while, this is a good indication this topic may have a lot of useful information that would be really at home on a wiki. A discussion forum is best for discussion, the wiki is best for archiving useful information. Until I can post some updates for the wiki, the general guideline for contents is that it's a wiki about the stuff this community finds useful. I'm not fooling myself or anyone else that we're creating a wiki about the japanese language in itself, that's way out of scope, and a waste of time since all this information is out there. Things that would be really at home on the wiki is basically all those topics you have wanted to be "Sticky'ed' in the past (but summarized)...

So right now I don't know how to re-insert a deleted topic. I don't want to mess up with the integrity of the forum database, never have tried this before. I do have backups, but in this case, and since it won't be possibe anymore, I would ask those who have a little free time, to try and salvage the useful bits from the internet archive, and how-to's and other useful information to a wiki page.

PS: The wiki shouldn't contain links to unauthorized downloads of copyrighted materials. Such links are sometimes tolerated here due to the dynamic nature of the forum and the topics age-ing, but they will not be tolerated on the wiki.

No, that would be this one: http://forum.koohii.com/showthread.php?tid=3283

That was part of the frustration: after this new thread got started, the old one got deleted, which put those of us that disagreed with that copyright stuff in an awkward position. The only thread left to point newbies to was the copyright quagmire.

2001.Kanji.Odyssey Thread gone? - ファブリス - 2009-11-22

Ah I see.

How about creating a new topic for discussion, and let the first post link to a new page on the wiki ? In that page, you can link back to the discussion, using a footer like this:

Code:
==Links==
* Related discussion on the RevTK forums [ [color=red](BROKEN LINK)[/color] http://forum.koohii.com/viewtopic.php?pid=xxxxx ]
No spaces between the brackets and the http link. The star will make a bullet. The == is a Heading 2, ===Heading 3===, etc. It's really easy to edit and fun as well.

Then I suggest archiving in the related wiki page the actual information, and continue discussion in the topic. The BIG difference is anyone registered on the wiki can contribute and improve this page, whereas here only the OP can change the original topic. And let's not even mention that other useful information is spread in pages after pages of discussion, which can't even begin to compare with the wiki page.

The easiest way to create a new page is to search for that page typing in the properly spelled title. Search results will say the page doesn't exist. Click the red link, and the page can be edited.

Ah... that copyright thread was what I figured new folks wouldn't want to wade through. I didn't realize that the group project thread was separate thread.

If it's any comfort, mafried, there are other threads which might have stuff similar to the content you describe as lost. I'll post a bit of a description so people can locate stuff more easily. 2001KO seems really popular! People have Zazen to thank for that I guess.

Yay for no more users deleting their topics =)

Looking at those permissions, is it even a good idea for normal users to be able to delete their own posts? It's useful for cleaning up accidental double-posts etc, but it can also make things very confusing to read when someone deletes their posts out of a discussion. In that situation, editing out the text is less disruptive.

(I would suggest "can delete own post only if no-one has yet replied", but I don't suppose this software supports that.)

2001.Kanji.Odyssey Thread gone? - bladethecoder - 2009-11-22

Of course. My concern is with people removing the placeholder so it appears there was never anything there, and the following posters seem to be talking nonsense. At least if there's a post that's been edited to say nothing, readers are given the clue that the upcoming posts are likely to refer to something that's no longer present.

Funny you mention the quote thing, since I've heard people say to these post-deleters "you're making a habit of this, so I'll make sure to quote you in future" Wink

2001.Kanji.Odyssey Thread gone? - ファブリス - 2009-11-22

If you make a topic by mistake, or decide to cancel for whatever reason, delete the contents, and ask to remove the topic instead (in the text). They will be cleaned up.

Chochajin - If you've gone through the steps on http://ichi2.net/anki/wiki/FileImport without success, then perhaps you could describe the problem in more detail and someone might be able to help.

IceCreamchan - I happen to have on my screen the unedited long version of your post about post deletion. (That 'other thread' was captured as well.) Paypal would work for me... Wink
