Hey,

I know this info is somewhere, but where do I get started to make audio files out of text I create for anki? what is the software, and does it handle German? thanks very much.

Textaloud GUI + Misaki voice engine for Japanese TTS, for German voice engines, I imagine they're all over the place. Khatzumoto posted an entry on this awhile ago, and if you search the forum for TTS, Misaki, Textaloud, etc, you're sure to find something.

This might sound like a really stupid suggestion, but can you get hold of a German speaker? TTS tend to be expensive, and you can use Anki's record facility to record a native speaker speaking instead. It's what I plan to do when I go back to learning Japanese (Chinese housemate is currently putting audio to all my cards Big Grin) It only takes 5-10 seconds per cards -> 360-720/hour at that rate, and you wouldn't need to do all that many for it to be useful (certainly not for all 10,000).

Just a suggestion anyway Wink

For German, use Sarah or Klaus voices from Acaplea (or even Julia voice if you like it), or you can use Katrin or Stefan voices from Loquendo.

Listen to a demo here:

imtranslator is a free online TTS and translator. For Japanese it uses Misaki's voice. The German voice also sounds very good. There seems to be a limit of 1000 characters.

Has anyone tried out the new TTS-plugin for anki?

Just tried it & it works great. My only criticism is that the default 11KHz 16 Bit mono voice output is pretty grainy, but aside from that it works great. It'd be great it the output KHz could be adjusted (to say, 32 KHz & 16 bit, which is what I typically use), but beggars can't be choosers.
