Mobile system with key interface to memorize Heisig kanjis - jokoto - 2007-03-20 I'd like to find a mobile system with key interface to memorize Heisig kanjis. I'd prefer input with keys and do not like to put out a pen to click on different screen buttons. Do you know a program that could do that? I also like the idea the program presenting me with kanjis I do not know automaticely (Supermemo, Full Recall). Leitner system is not what I want. So far I can use supermemo with any palmtop (windows, palm) as it just uses a handfull of buttons which are on all palmtops, right? There is also Twinkle where you can input via keys? I'd prefer a PALM System as Treo 680 seems to be a cheap solution. Which systems do you use / used and what are your experiences? Mobile system with key interface to memorize Heisig kanjis - RoboTact - 2007-03-20 If you somehow press that 'review all expired cards' link on review page the same way you start review in your favorite flashcard system, it'll be essentially the same, both in selection algorithm and interface. Mobile system with key interface to memorize Heisig kanjis - jokoto - 2007-03-20 Hi RoboTact, which system do you mean? I am interested in finding a program for mobile windows or palm. Mobile system with key interface to memorize Heisig kanjis - RoboTact - 2007-03-20 Never mind - it was just nonsense... Mobile system with key interface to memorize Heisig kanjis - jreaves - 2007-03-20 I used to use Palm SuperMemo for studying another subject. However, Palm SuperMemo is not well-suited to displaying kanji and does not seem to be actively developed. Now I'm using Twinkle with good results. The developer wrote the program specifically for learning kanji (though it could be used for other sorts of flashcards too). You can navigate the program with buttons as well as with the stylus. It also optionally lets you write the character on the screen before showing you the kanji. By the way, if you're really following Heisig's method, you'll set up your flashcard program to present you not with kanji but rather with the keyword. Heisig says that if you learn to write the kanji given the keyword, the other direction happens automatically. Although I'm just in the 500's right now myself, I'm already finding that I recognize lots of characters on newspapers, menus, etc. (I apologize if I'm telling you something you already know, but I got the impression that you might be studying the other direction from your earlier post.) Mobile system with key interface to memorize Heisig kanjis - jokoto - 2007-03-20 Hi jreaves, thank you very much for your detailed information. I was also thinking about supermemo but it is not developed for that a long time. I had also an eye on twinkle and am thinking of buying a Treo 680 and hoping about Vista compatibility. I will setup twinkle with keyword to kanji as this is what Heisig recommends and I am trusting him with that - for now ... Navigating with stylus would be so cool.As far as I think the cheapest palms now are T/X and 680, right? They only have a price difference of 50 ? here and so I am considering 680 for his telephone functions. Another question: is it possible to increase font size in Twinkle? I'd like to see the kanji over the whole screen, it's just a matter of getting a feeling for my kanjis

Of course, you can also buy used. I use a Samsung i500 which I think has the best phone functions of them all (perhaps except i550 which used to be available in certain markets), and I don't see any competition on the horizon so far -- but availability of course depends on where in the world you exactly are. I don't think it is possible to increase the font size in Twinkle -- not yet, at least. It is possible to display images though I think, so perhaps if one could convert kanji into images then maybe... Mobile system with key interface to memorize Heisig kanjis - jokoto - 2007-03-21 Palms are not capable of syncing programs on Vista. So I can not use them. Looking forward for a Windows system. Fullrecall.com is mentioned as a good program, but is not running on modern windows mobile 5 systems. What programs do run under mobile windows that are somewhat good for remembering the kanjis? That's what I've got. I literally bought it for Twinkle so didn't want anything fancy. That said, the Z22 is so un-fancy that it can't handle Twinkle's hi-res fonts. It's not bad, and it was cheap. But if I had my choice again, I would go for a T|X. (I use a Mac, so syncing with Vista doesn't concern me!) Mobile system with key interface to memorize Heisig kanjis - jokoto - 2007-03-21 I was also looking for either T|X or Treo 680 but syncing inability is a clear no for me .... So bad ... Anyway Twinkle can not increase font size, that's also a big minus for using palm. I'd like to see heisig handwriting font on a pda that much ....
Mobile system with key interface to memorize Heisig kanjis - jreaves - 2007-03-21 Twinkle doesn't require any special synching software, just the standard Backup and Install conduits. If you can't synch Twinkle to your PC, then you can't sych anything. Of course, as far as I know that may be the case. I use Twinkle with a Mac, with MissingSync, so I'm not familiar with Vista. (From what I've read about how Vista is encumbered by DRM, I don't want to become familiar with it either, but that's an issue for another forum...) Twinkle supports two font sizes (at least on hi-res Palms). I find the larger font good for use with RTK. The smaller font is probably okay for someone who already knows the kanji pretty well, but a little too small when you're first learning them and want to look at the details of the characters. Mobile system with key interface to memorize Heisig kanjis - jokoto - 2007-03-21 Palm can not sync any software under Vista. But I can just use another pc to sync one times the heisig list and program to palm and then just work with Twinkle. Maybe that's the best and easiest way. Hope the larger font is big enough .... The other way would be to buy a copy of Supermemo Pocket PC and a Pocket PC. Hope the larger font is big enough ....the large-res font is not any larger, it's only cuter ![]() I don't know what supermemo for pocket PC looks like, but the one for Palm looks like $hit, and the one for PC is rather peculiar too. not sure about keyboard support -- would be a must for me. maybe you can run a palm emulator and run it under a pocket windows system, i'd be interested to know if it works out. but i am sure they'll write vista drivers for palm soon enough. Mobile system with key interface to memorize Heisig kanjis - jokoto - 2007-03-22 I have just bought a Palm T|X and looking forward to run Twinkle on it for reviewing the first 500 kanjis as Heisig is recommending. With supermemo, could you increase font size of kanjis? |
