Good Epwing reader for OSX? - Zorlee - 2009-11-10

Hi everyone!

I browsed the forums, but I just couldn´t find any information about Epwing readers for Mac OSX. What program would you guys recommend?

Thank you very much!
Zorlee..

The two main ones are Jamming and コトノコ. Jamming is probably better, but it is commercial software. コトノコ is free & open source. JEDICT can also read EPWING files if you buy it, but it's not very good at it from what I hear. Neither JEDICT nor コトノコ is updated very frequently.

I use コトノコ since I am cheap.

It looks like Logophile is the replacement for Jamming.

Thank you very much for your quick reply!
I´m cheap as well, so I´ll check out コトノコ =)

Ok, so I´ve downloaded and installed コトノコ.
Could someone enlighten me on how to add dictionaries to the software? I´ve downloaded several Epwing dictionaries, but I don´t know how to add them. Anyone? =)

Thank you!

Check the preferences. Click the + button and select the folder that contains a CATALOGS or CATALOG file.

If you have multiple dictionaries in the same folder, I believe you can choose the parent folder as well (maybe even one more level, I think that's how I did it)

Smile Coming soon

(made w/ PyQt so it's cross-platform)

Looking forward to it. I never could get any of the other readers working for me on OS X.

コトノコ works pretty well. What couldn't you do with it?

Good Epwing reader for OSX? - FutureBlues - 2010-06-20

I couldn't get it to load my dictionaries. At all.

Which dictionary, and which kotonoko version (2.x?)? It's worked with the 6-7 I've tried. You need to select folders that have a CATALOG or CATALOGS file inside them.

Either your dictionaries are not EPWING/are corrupt, or PEBCAK.

First beta release of my EPWING reader Smile http://code.google.com/p/manabi-dict/downloads/list

Mac OSX 10.5+ only at the moment. Windows support soon. I've only tested it on my 10.6 machine so please let me know if it breaks.

Go to Preferences to add EPWING dictionaries.

There is also an option to convert dictionaries in EPWING format to OS X Dictionary.app format (10.5+). The procedure is described here: http://www.binword.com/blog/archives/000588.html

It's really nice to have these dictionaries available in Dictionary.app, because Dictionary.app is well integrated into whole operating system.

@wahnfrieden
It would be nice if you could use the code from manabi-dict to create a tool (command line tool is enough) that converts EPWING dicts to format that Dictionary Development Kit supports. That would eliminate the need of using windows for conversion.

Good Epwing reader for OSX? - wahnfrieden - 2010-12-20

@monom Sorry but I'm more interested in developing a better dictionary app than The built-in one since I find it deficient for a few reasons. I have longer term plans for Manabi Dict too, such as integration with an SRS.

You're welcome to use my open source "epywing" (see my github) library though to do this yourself.
