Which Japanese Bible translation is the best for study? - Jarvik7 - 2009-11-05 Why would someone ever pay for a Bible? True Believers are desperate to convert people so they'll give out copies for free. I got a hardcover bilingual copy (English on one page, furigana-ed Japanese on the facing page) for free from some old man sitting at a table in the student union building of my university. He had bibles in 30+ languages piled up there. Unfortunately it's only the boring new testament and not the action packed old testament

(The New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures)It's written horizontally unlike other popular versions of Bible in Japanese. It's translation is solid language-wise, though it's basically translation from English versions. Some people say Jehovah's Witnesses deliberately translated it so it favors their doctrine. If you don't like their interpretation, you might want to avoid it. I like its modern wording better, but it still sounds like a translation, which it is. If you don't like their interpretation, you might want to avoid it.Actually, I think their translation is more accurate to the original text. (e.g. their translation of the controversial passage John 1:1 "... and the Word was a god" instead of "was God" is closer to the original Greek, because the Greek word for "God" used in the phrase "and the Word was with God," is the definite form hotheos, meaning "The God", but in the second phrase "and the Word was God", the Greek word used for "God" is the indefinite form tontheos, which means "a god". However, in Biblical language, the term "god" is used metaphorically to indicate power. For example, Moses is referred to as "god" in Exodus 7:1, "And the Lord said unto Moses: See, I have made thee a god to Pharaoh; and Aaron thy brother shall be thy prophet.") Which Japanese Bible translation is the best for study? - liosama - 2009-11-05 I don't have anything on the bible but I had a bunch of stuff on the quran. Here's the entire Quran in Japanese. There ain't no English here though. Just Arabic and Japanese. http://www.alislam.org/quran/tafseer/guide.htm?region=JP Another cleaner pdf copy. http://7zp.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/japanese-quran.pdf I a long time back I found a bunch of random Islamic stuff in Japanese and English and Arabic. Either way I found them all extremely boring, the Quran is only nice in Arabic, sounds ridiculous in any other language. If anyone has access to traditional shinto/zen pdf + chants.mp3 gimmie~

If I'm not misjudging, the style seems to be reasonably modern. FWIW, I think style's really important -- if I look at the bible translations they tend to have in German churches, well, I can understand them as a native speaker, but let's just say I wouldn't want anyone to learn German from them. ^_^ I'm not a Christian, but when I get around to it I might actually paste some of the PDF text into the browser (for Rikaichan) and read a bit. Which Japanese Bible translation is the best for study? - liosama - 2009-11-06 I grew up a muslim yes ahibba. I can only recite the first verse of the Quran, and that's the fatiha (the opening~). That's about as much as I know about Islam. I really love listening to the Quran especially by well trained reciters sounds so awesome, a musical experience even. It's a shame that people associate listening to it is synonymous with being religious though lol. The NWT's main distinguishing feature (in English) is that, like the American Standard and a few others, it maintains the tetragrammaton (God's name): YHWH, which is translated as either Yahweh or Jehovah in English. エホバ in Japanese, Ye-he-wa in Chinese... etc etc... The Japanese version is online: http://watchtower.org/j/bible/index.htm Interestingly, seems the bible names were translated from Hebrew/Greek. John = Yohane, Jude is Yakobu, and there are a few other indications that it is at least not solely translated from English. You can also probably get one from any JW. They can order the bible in most languages if you ask and don't charge for their literature. Which Japanese Bible translation is the best for study? - Thora - 2009-11-06 Off topic: I find the discussions on religion, nationality, "race" interesting interesting. My family (parents, 3 kids and spouses) cover: 6 birth countries, 3 religions, 3 races, 8 languages and 5 countries of residence. You wouldn't be able to guess nationalities based on colour. We eat some different foods, make stupid comments about sunburn-ability, and incorporate unfamiliar ceremonies at weddings, etc. Yet surprising, we never talk about religion, nationality or race. I feel very lucky to have this loving family for whom these aren't issues. These threads remind me, however, how superficial my knowledge of religion is. You've inspired me to check out some Christianity101, Islam101 and Judaism101 stuff (any recommendations?) Maybe I could hand out summaries at our next family dinner. Or at least brief explanations of the weird ceremonies.

Which Japanese Bible translation is the best for study? - Jarvik7 - 2009-11-09 JW followers (more correctly) believe that Jebus was a cyborg warrior from the future. I know this to be true because my only friend with a SNES when I was a kid was a Jehovas Witness. We all know that SNES > Genesis, so that doesn't need further explanation. Which Japanese Bible translation is the best for study? - Hashiriya - 2009-11-09 here i found it "Jehovah’s Witnesses believe Jesus is Michael the archangel, the highest created being. This contradicts many Scriptures which clearly declare Jesus to be God (John 1:1,14, 8:58, 10:30). Jehovah’s Witnesses believe salvation is obtained by a combination of faith, good works, and obedience. This contradicts countless scriptures which declare salvation to be received by grace through faith (John 3:16; Ephesians 2:8-9; Titus 3:5). Jehovah’s Witnesses reject the Trinity, believing Jesus to be a created being and the Holy Spirit to essentially be the inanimate power of God. Jehovah’s Witnesses reject the concept of Christ’s substitutionary atonement and instead hold to a ransom theory, that Jesus’ death was a ransom payment for Adam’s sin." http://www.gotquestions.org/Jehovahs-Witnesses.html it also goes into saying they have their own Bible called the Watchtower Bible that they modified and retranslated to fit their belief system. this also raises the question SNES>Dreamcast or SNES<Dreamcast Which Japanese Bible translation is the best for study? - epsilondelta - 2009-11-09 Hashiriya Wrote:is the JW audio bible the same as a "normal" Bible? although i don`t know JW beliefs specifically, i know that some of their beliefs are different than "normal" Christian beliefs.. i am just wondering if they took out or added anything into this Bible... thanksI believe that where JW beliefs differ from mainstream Christian beliefs, it can affect their translation (or perhaps the translation/interpretation affects the beliefs, depending on how you look at it). So if you're unhappy with JW's teachings, I'd probably get a different bible translation. Thank you magamo. Hashiriya Wrote:it also goes into saying they have their own Bible called the Watchtower Bible that they modified and retranslated to fit their belief systemIn 2003 Professor Jason BeDuhn, associate professor of religious studies at Northern Arizona University in the United States, published a 200-page study of nine of "the Bibles most widely in use in the English-speaking world," including the New American Bible, The King James Bible and The New International Version. For each passage, he compared the Greek text with the renderings of each English translation, and looked for biased attempts to change the meaning. BeDuhn states that "most of the differences are due to the greater accuracy of the NW (the JW's translation) as a literal, conservative translation." He says that "it emerges as the most accurate of the translations compared," calling it a "remarkably good" translation. The New Catholic Encyclopedia says of the NWT reference edition: "[Jehovah's Witnesses'] translation of the Bible [has] an impressive critical apparatus. The work is excellent." Hashiriya Wrote:This contradicts many Scriptures which clearly declare Jesus to be GodJesus never declared that he is God. "They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men." Matthew 15:9 There is not a single unequivocal statement in the entire Bible where Jesus himself says, "I am God" or where he says, "worship me". In fact the Bible contains statements attributed to Jesus in which he preached quite the contrary. The following statements in the Bible are attributed to Jesus Christ: "My Father is greater than I." John 14:28 "My Father is greater than all." John 10:29 "I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgement is just; because I seek not my own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me." John 5:30 "And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou has sent." John 17:3 Jesus Christ is a man approved of God: "Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know." Acts 2:22 Hashiriya Wrote:Jehovah’s Witnesses believe salvation is obtained by a combination of faith, good works, and obedience."What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? 15 Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. 16 If one of you says to him, "Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed," but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? 17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead." James 2:14-17 "19 You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder. 20 You foolish man, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless[a]? 21 Was not our ancestor Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? 22 You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. 23 And the scripture was fulfilled that says, "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness," and he was called God's friend. 24 [b]You see that a person is justified by what he does and not by faith alone. " James 2:19-20 Hashiriya Wrote:Jehovah’s Witnesses reject the Trinity, believing Jesus to be a created being"That all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one" John 17:21-22 If Jesus Christ and God are one, and he is part of God, does that mean that all of the 12 disciples are also part of God? "Why do you call me good?" Jesus answered. No one is good–except God alone." Mark 10:18 If Jesus doesn't consider himself as "good", then how can any sane person put him on the same level as God? Also, another important point to notice in Mark 10:18 is the word "alone." Jesus in this verse is clearly giving exclusivity to God when he said "alone". If Jesus was truly part of God Almighty and the trinity was true, then Jesus, to say the least, would not have said that. Let us look at Exodus 4:22 "Thus saith Jehovah, Israel is my son, even my firstborn." Here we see in this verse that Israel is not only God's so called "Son", but also his first born !!. Does this mean that Jehovah is Israel? Does it mean that we must worship Israel as Jehovah? Of course not !!! Also, let us look at Jeremiah 31:9 "I am a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn." Ephraim in this verse means Israel. This verse is similar to Exodus 4:22. Let us also look at Psalm 2:7 "....Jehovah had said onto me (David), thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee." Here in this verse we see that God not only called David his "Son", but also had made him his begotten Son !!! "How can you say, "We are wise, for we have the law of the LORD," when actually the lying pen of the scribes has handled it falsely?" Jeremiah 8:8 Which Japanese Bible translation is the best for study? - Hashiriya - 2009-11-09 but what about the 1st sentence i put? "Jehovah’s Witnesses believe Jesus is Michael the archangel, the highest created being." is this a true belief of Jehovah’s Witnesses? as for the Trinity and Jesus being apart of it see this: 5) There is subordination within the Trinity. Scripture shows that the Holy Spirit is subordinate to the Father and the Son, and the Son is subordinate to the Father. This is an internal relationship and does not deny the deity of any person of the Trinity. This is simply an area which our finite minds cannot understand concerning the infinite God. Concerning the Son see Luke 22:42, John 5:36, John 20:21, and 1 John 4:14. Concerning the Holy Spirit see John 14:16, 14:26, 15:26, 16:7, and especially John 16:13-14. http://www.gotquestions.org/Trinity-Bible.html yeh, i kinda like reading this website btw ![]() honestly, i am not really good at religious debates, this is just what i believe personally... but i will say, even if i am at fault for any beliefs that may not be correct according to God, I believe in the truth... whatever God`s true way is (if that makes any sense) Which Japanese Bible translation is the best for study? - Codexus - 2009-11-09 ahibba Wrote:"Why do you call me good?"
