Use a spaced repetition system to learn Japanese!!! - AnimeAddict - 2009-11-05

I know people have mentioned it before, but I feel the need to reiterate the power of spaced repetition systems (SRS) for those who have yet to discover them. It helps you learn more quickly and efficiently! Quite simply, it's like a flash card application, only smarter in that you grade yourself on how well you answered a question and the program will schedule the next best time in which the card will appear for review again. Basically, things you don't now well appear more often than things you know well so you don't waste time.

The two best free SRS programs out there are Mnemosyne (http://www.mnemosyne-proj.org) and Anki (ichi2.net/anki/).

The most effective method I've come across in my Japanese studies is to learn LOTS and LOTS of SENTENCES in conjunction with an SRS.

Khatzumoto's blog, All Japanese All The Time (http://www.alljapaneseallthetime.com) describes the SRS/sentences method in greater detail and he also provides a lot of motivational posts.

On a side note, if you own an iPhone or iPod touch, you can use iSRS (http://groups.google.com/group/isrs-support) for Mnemosyne or iAnki for Anki (http://ichi2.net/anki/wiki/iAnki) to do your learning on-the-go!

I don't mean to be an leprechaun, and I know you mean well by this post, and thank you. But did you really write a post encouraging the use of an SRS software on... *drum roll* a website whose core IS an SRS program?

Sorry, just busting your balls a bit :p

On a more serious note, SRS software is great and an invaluable tool, however it's still a tool and you still need to put in effort to learn, so just keep that in mind.

LOL, sorry my bad. Honestly when I used this site a year ago I was only focused on grabbing the kanji/keywords to enter into my SRS and didn't realize until you mentioned it Big Grin.

Anyways, I guess my main point is study sentences with an SRS and that Mnemosyne and Anki are great offline apps and definitely check out All Japanese All The Time blog!

Something else that really works for me is the "Heisig Method" (air quotes w/ fingers).

You need to lurk more AnimeAddict =D

Use a spaced repetition system to learn Japanese!!! - mezbup - 2009-11-05

hahahah if you weren't new that would have been considered the troll post of the century. Practically everyone here uses Anki or the SRS built into this site. Some have opted not to. I don't use it for everything but shiiit oh dear is it useful for other stuff. Nuff said. Anki = Brilliant.

Had you said #117, that would have been priceless.

That's the most random thread I've ever seen on the internet. Maybe I need to get around more.

Did he died?

IceCream Wrote:is this 関西弁? 「めがっさ」
Not really. I and some of my friends used to use it when we were little, but it was one of slang within a small inner circle.

Somehow the exact same word was used in a famous light novel as an idiosyncratic word used by a character. Now there are anime, manga and other adaptations of the novel, and it became a nerdy word that people in a certain community only recognize. Its meaning is clear to native speakers from the sound and context the word appears in.

I also heard that the author of the light novel speaks the Osaka dialect, so there may be a linguistic link between めがっさ and 関西弁.

ruiner Wrote:Hey Magamo, have you seen this? http://www.takke.jp/
I think I heard of that somewhere on the internet. But if I remember correctly, it doesn't have many functions and not as useful as standard SRS software. Some English learners on 2ch used it, but I wasn't very interested. I think there is a thread for the software on 2ch, but it may be my imagination. For some reason I'm still having a hangover.

IceCream Wrote:looool i didn't even read the thread!!

totally random

are they like that in japanese?? i guess that's what you'd end up sounding like if you learn from 2ch...
Some threads are totally random, and some are civil. The rest are insanely stupid. I don't think 2ch speak is the most practical Japanese net speech, but it'll be pretty funny if foreigners can mimic it. If you visit there, you might want to steer clear of idiotic threads.

Actually I was watching idiots fighting against stupids while drinking. I got bored and went to RtK and some other forums to see if there were interesting threads. Before I knew it, I already screwed a thread on a forum I recently started visiting by my idiotic posts and 2ch-ish spiteful words. I'm PMing some members over there to say sorry for what I vaguely remember posting...

haha

Speaking of sentence generators, there is a serious Japanese tool that automatically produces high level business letters and stuff. You choose the purpose, style and the like, and answer detailed questions like "Is it all your employee's fault?"

http://www.teglet.co.jp/naoko/

I haven't used it before. But example letters on the site look very professional.

Hey guys, one of these days I thought of a round thing you put on cars, so they can move more easily when you push them. I call it wheel. It is very good, you should try!

The best thing about this thread is that if AnimeAddict was in fact trolling he would be the be-all-and-end-all king of the trolls.

Use a spaced repetition system to learn Japanese!!! - furrykef - 2009-11-08

I dunno about that. The point of trolling, as I understand the definition of the term, is to incite a flame war. That hasn't really happened here.
