The KanKen Chronicles - Taishi - 2014-10-04 The step books will test you on 4 kanji compounds like in the game, but it doesn't have a list or anything to help you prepare. You probably want the 4 kanji compound book for that, but I don't have it so I can't tell you if it's good or not. The KanKen Chronicles - TiddleMonkey - 2014-10-04 I have the 4 character compound book from that company. It doesn't have an index or list of what characters are what level, but each entry does say the level beside it. The book has a good number more compounds than the game's dictionary and there is more information for a fair number of the compounds (related words, origins and such). This is a typical page from the book. As for the game, I really like how stroke counts (among other things) are multiple choice now. I must have spent hours writing '3' only for it to read it as '1'. I do miss the ability to write the character on screen while thinking though. An index ordered by kanken level would have been useful. I'm really liking the game. I'm going do some 3 kyuu kakitori practice for a while while I learn some more 4 kanji compounds. I'll go back to taking full scale tests after I get some more of them under my belt. The character recognition is still a bit sketchy though. On some kanji it has a really hard time in recognizing the correct character. But my poor handwriting may be contributing to it also. The KanKen Chronicles - Kanken - 2014-10-05 Thanks for the answers Potbelly, I'm going to buy the game. I spent countless hours on Kanken DS 3. I will only take Kanken Level 2 since pre-1 and 1 levels can only be taken in Japan (and pre-1 could be doable but 1 is far too hard for me). It doesn't. The KanKen Chronicles - erlog - 2014-10-06 RandomQuotes Wrote:The text is either green or red...It wasn't meant as a criticism. PotbellyPig Wrote:Looks like I found my limit without studying with the practice exams in the 3ds game. After passing 4 kyuu many times in a row, I proceeded to take a 3 kyuu test. It is harder but I would probably pass if it weren't for the 4 kanji compounds. At the 3 kyuu level it asks to write two of the characters in each compound and I just don't know enough of them. I took the test two times and I'm failing by 7 or 8 points each time. Do the step books for each level contain a list of the 4 kanji compounds? I'm assuming the books have them but I just want to make sure. In the meantime I guess I'll just practice the kakitori section which I am also a bit weak in.Yeah, the Step books give bunches of 4 kanji compounds, but not necessarily all the ones that appear on the test. For 3級+ there also exist other books that are lists of vocab mined from past tests that are sorted by likelihood of appearance. If you're in Japan it might be worth picking up one of those since it's going to be more comprehensive than the Step books for 4 character idioms. I was stuck on that section for 2級, and I ended up having to do that. I was alright with just the step books up until that point, though. I believe there's also a giant Anki deck of 4 character idioms available that you can also sort by KanKen level. I'm not sure I trust their sorting, though, and it also takes a bit of munging in Excel to format them the same as the KanKen questions. You seem to be doing well, by the way. I had to start studying Step books to progress at 4級. And about how many 4 kanji compounds did you memorize? That deck has over 3000 compounds total and about 400 at 2 kyuu (though you say their categorization may be off). I'm trying to not study specific vocabulary for each level except for the four kanji compounds for now. I have a list of about 400 which I am going through now which range from 3 kyuu to 2 kyuu.RandomQuotes Wrote:The text is either green or red...I was stuck on that section for 2級, and I ended up having to do that. The KanKen Chronicles - erlog - 2014-10-06 I had 400 四字熟語 from 5級 to 2級 in my Anki deck when I passed 2級. I took 2級 like 4 or 5 times or something, though. So it's likely I just got a lucky draw on which ones appeared the last time I took it when I passed. Here's the book I used: http://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/4816352031/ The KanKen Chronicles - PotbellyPig - 2014-10-06 erlog Wrote:I had 400 四字熟語 from 5級 to 2級 in my Anki deck when I passed 2級. Did you study the "regular" (non 4 kanji) vocabulary in the step books or this book before you took the tests? Or did you only concentrate on just the 4 kanji compounds that appear the books? Also do you remember about how many words you knew before you passed the pre-2 kyuu and 2 kyuu exams? As I stated previously, I am in the 23k word range and was wondering how far that can take me without having to resort to word lists (besides the yojijukugo ones which I know I have to go through). The KanKen Chronicles - Katsuo - 2014-10-06 I didn’t make the anki deck referred to above (3,300 四字熟語), but the data appears to be from a spreadsheet I compiled a few years ago. The level ratings for each 四字熟語 are simply based on the levels of its constituent kanji. This gives reasonable, but not perfect results. Comparing the ratings to those in the new version of the official dictionary, about 90% of them match up. Reasons for the differences are as follows: 1. I made the spreadsheet before the present joyo kanji reforms so some expressions have changed level (but this is only significant at level 2). 2. My ratings were based purely on the kanji levels whereas the book also takes into account the specific readings and the school year in which they’re taught. For example my spreadsheet rated 我田引水 as ‘5’ but the book rates it ‘4’ because the reading ガ of 我 is not taught until middle school. One thing to bear in mind when using the dictionary is that it sometimes lists expressions under alternative versions, e.g. 傍若無人 is found under 旁若無人 and the book’s rating ‘1’ is for the latter, rare, version. Some prep books include lists of 四字熟語 at their particular level, and these are quite useful. They typically have around 200 entries and give a 70/80% coverage of those that turn up in an actual exam. The exams usually include a few 四字熟語 from lower levels, so you need quite a good coverage to guarantee scoring 90/100% on this part of the test. The KanKen Chronicles - rmpalpha - 2014-10-07 I'm currently at 35% of 8級, 92% of 9級, and 96% of 10級. I'm happy to say that I'm now consistently passing the 8級 test with scores between 135-140 - the vocabulary has started to become second nature now that I'm seeing unfamiliar words again and again, but the progress with 8級 is substantially slower than in the previous two levels. I've been playing this game for 45 hours now, and have answered 10,521 questions. I think this exercise over the last couple of months has started to pay off since I have found myself using some of the vocabulary I've learned in my Japanese lessons. I think that I'll keep working on 8級 until I've seen around 50% of the level then I'll take the plunge into 7級. Should be interesting, as it seems the jump from 8級 to 7級 is substantial. It's unclear to me how much vocab I know because of how long I've been doing stuff in Japanese. The last time I took one of those vocab size estimate tests(between 準2級 and 2級) it put me around 30-35k or something. I'm not sure how much I trust that, but I do know that I can read most native material quite comfortably without a dictionary at a decent pace.erlog Wrote:I had 400 四字熟語 from 5級 to 2級 in my Anki deck when I passed 2級. I still come across a handful of words I don't know every week, and they're mostly everyday words that are so basic they never come up in vocab builders or are katakana words so they're never on KanKen. Yesterday's word was ランドセル. 23k seems only a few thousand short of where you would want to be. With where you are in your KanKen studies, I don't think you have much to worry about. You'll probably increase your vocab size by a few thousand as you go along. When you get into the 15k+, 20k+ vocab size it stops really being useful to count because you probably have most of the low-hanging fruit covered. It starts to become more important to think about proficiency within specific domains like business terms, school terms, biology terms, etc. Through experience you'll be able to spot the domains where your vocabulary is lacking, and then concentrate on those as you need them for your lifestyle. I have about 4,000 words that I have left in my deck and within them, I'm finding a good number of words that I didn't know in the 3 kyuu material. That would bring me up to around 27k words. Those 4k extra are from words I found in books and also from a frequency list that I have been going through. I merged the frequency list with my deck so I don't have duplicates. I don't really like frequency lists after 10k words (Core 10k) but I'm not doing serious reading as often as I did because I am concentrating or listening practice now. The main reason I am training with the kanken program is that I like doing the kakitori like tests. From doing recognition in anki all the time I'm not used to recognizing words from the reading. And that is precisely what you do when you are listening. I think it will help along with regular listening practice. The KanKen Chronicles - PotbellyPig - 2014-10-11 After practicing kakitori and going through about 150 four kanji compounds in Anki over the last few days. I started passing 3 kyuu tests in the 3ds game. I took a look pre-2 kyuu and took about four 15 minute exams, passing 2 of them I don't know how accurate taking the 15 min test is so I'll try the 1 hour ones later. It seems I need to know a lot more 4 character compounds. Also the synonym/antonym part is different and harder. You need to write in the full answer (not just one kanji of two). And I'm hitting more vocabulary I don't know. I think there definitely is a bug with the 3ds game. I only did 3 kyuu to about 30% or so and I was getting a ton of repeat questions in the exams. It's not my imagination. Anyone else with the game experience this? The KanKen Chronicles - Kanken - 2015-01-11 Apparently new Kanken games (well, based on the same one we discussed above but with a game for each level if I understand correctly) will be released on Wednesday: http://www.gamefaqs.com/search/index.html?game=kouekizaidan+houjin I don't know what will be different but if anybody knows, I would like to know hehe. The KanKen Chronicles - TheVinster - 2015-01-11 I posted in this thread a long time ago; despite that I never followed-through with legitimately studying writing. Could someone tell me which of the kanken games to get? I have neither a DS nor a 3DS, so I'd have to buy one. Seems if I get a DS version the region isn't an issue, but for the 3DS it is. Both systems seem to be fairly cheap these days so any input would be appreciated. Both the games and systems for either one would come out to roughly the same amount so I'd probably purchase the one that is recommended (if they're different). If you only need a section it's the way to go, but if you already have it, the downloads would be an extreme waste of money. (3ds game is roughly 3000 yen, the total for the downloads as you can sere below is 4200) [1級 準1級 2級 /準2級 /3級]各800 円 [4級 /5級]各600 円 [6級 /7級 /8級 /9級 10級]各300 円 The KanKen Chronicles - Kanken - 2015-01-17 Oh well thank you, since I ordered the full version a few days ago there's no need to buy those. TheVinster => I have yet to receive my 3DS copy but it's from the series of the Kanken DS games so that shouldn't be very different. I have Kanken DS 3 Deluxe and I find it excellent. Someone who got both versions could help you more. If that's the case then let me know your thoughts when you do receive it. Would be interested to know. I mean if I'm getting a DS no reason to not just get a 3DS right, and in that case get the newer game. Question: If you were to state all aspects of Japanese that studying for the kanken has benefitted you in, what would they be? I have issues reading location/people names, and of course writing. I'm sure it'll solve those. I could also learn new words along the way and such I imagine. Is using the kanken game alone to study sufficient in preparing for this test? The KanKen Chronicles - TheVinster - 2015-01-24 I was going to take this opportunity to purchase the newest Japanese 3DS released a few months ago. I'd purchase the Japanese 3DS game as well, and an AC adapter (system doesn't come with one. Total would be about $280 including shipping. Worth it? The KanKen Chronicles - PotbellyPig - 2015-03-11 It's been a while since I played around with the kanken game for the 3DS. But I was wondering, do you guys consider the kanken step books a good source of vocabulary? I'm currently at about 28.5k words that I have gone through in anki. Last light novel I read I added about 105 new words out of a 260 page book. So the amount of new words, while a good amount, are slowing down. I was thinking of dumping the vocabulary from the pre-2 and 2 kyuu step books into my anki deck. Is this a good idea? Are the words useful enough to be worth learning? Or are they too esoteric? Or if I wanted to add more words from a general source would I do better with a frequency list? I have added words from a large frequency list in the past but was thinking of doing something different this time. Thanks in advance for your opinion. Thanks in advance for your opinion.I think at your level, lists of any kinds won't do you much good if you're worried about how useful the words are, since at this point "useful" is on an individual basis. Since you probably already know most of the useful vocab in pre-2 and 2 you should expect maybe 20% of any new words you learn to be useful for you. If this sounds discouraging to you, you should probably just keep doing what you're doing. If, however, you're still interested, I personally think it's a great way to reinforce one's overall kanji ability. To give an example: even if 桟道 is not a particularly useful nor useful words for most people (Japanese people I have asked have not known this word) it has personally helped me better grasp the meaning of 桟, which appears in other more common words such as 桟橋. In other words, the "useless" vocab reinforces the "useful" vocab, so I guess useless is a relative term. I won't tell you which is the better idea, but you can hopefully make your own opinion based on this post. The KanKen Chronicles - PotbellyPig - 2015-03-12 Taishi Wrote:Thanks for your thoughts and the example. Its a good one since I already knew 桟橋 but not 桟道. The issue is that I like to learn new words at a clip of 33 a day. At 28.5k, I'm planning to do this until I reach 40k or so. With a whole book just producing 100 new words at this point, I would have to read like crazy to add to my word list. So the question for me is whether to just add from this frequency list I have (I think the top 60k words) or add about 2k words from the two step books (pre-2 and 2 kyuu). I agree that words from a frequency list or the step books won't be as useful as from actual reading at this point. It may be more interesting to do them from the step books since then I can review with the kanken tests and also the 3ds game. I think the reasoning that you go through while working out the kanken problems is helpful. Anyone else have any other opinions on this?PotbellyPig Wrote:It's been a while since I played around with the kanken game for the 3DS. The KanKen Chronicles - PotbellyPig - 2015-03-14 I went through the first 6 steps of the pre-2kyuu book and was able to add abt 250 new words between the listed words and those in the exercises (including the 4 kanji compounds). The exercises are challenging since you are used to just seeing the words in kanji and not going from hiragana to kanji. Especially for someone like me whose listening ability isn't that great. It really makes you think. If one keeps doing this, I'm sure one's language ability will improve. I'll keep at it as much as I can or until I get bored and go back to reading books. |
