Rich... Well, let´s just say that my diet this month will consist of instant-ramen ONLY! =)

I ordered from yesasia.com - free international shipping (but their prices are a little higher due to this, but... Whatever!)

I am going to start a new thread for the domestic - japanese disc combos

I found 428: Fuusa Sareta Shibuya De is out, and actually I just learned about it. Has anybody played it yet? I know this thread is a few months dead, so I wanted to know. I'm going to get a PS3 and the fact that they have a visual novel out is a bit intriguing, even though I'm not sure if I'll be able to understand it. If anybody can tell me more, and maybe recommend it, that'd be great.

Just downloaded Bionic Commando from the UK PSN store and it's all in Japanese, it's only text chat though so far. But it's in 日本語 nonetheless.

Fallout 3 is great. It's got a ton of Japanese voice acting, exact subtitles in almost every situation, several books worth of reading-text, and no option for English for those with no will-power.

Heavy Rain is good too, if, like me, you like to have Japanese subtitles along with speech.

I haven't played them yet, but Metal Gear Solid 3 and Final FantasyXIII look promising.

If you're into hack an slay games try Sengoku Basara 3 (also on Nintendo Wii). It's basically Sengoku Musou on steroids... which in itself is kind of like Japanese history on steroids.

Nice - I was reading through the PS3 threads just last night, and was going to rebump this thread myself. I will be getting a PS3 in late August and can't wait to rock a few good Japanese games. I'm a NFL fan, so I have to get Madden 11 (no Japanese unfortunately), and I really want Demon's Souls (also no Japanese from what I hear? too bad) - that game just looks like it was made for me. I have played a little Fallout 3 in english, and loved it, so the Japanese version is probably a must get. And I think Fallout 4 comes out in Oct or Nov, which should be pretty great.

Also looking good is Street Fighter 4 - how much Japanese is in the game? I just checked out Sengoku Basara 3 on youtube - looks pretty fun, and it looks like they jabber quite a bit too. Heavy Rain in Japanese looks really interesting too. Does anyone have this? Does the US version play in Japanese if you set it that way, or do you need to buy a Japanese version? I think at my level this game might be really tough, but maybe that kind of pressure would be good for learning(?). Also, Tales of Vesperia does look pretty cool.

So give us an update PS3 people.

Heavy Rain does not have Japanese on the American disc, and it would be a pretty hard game to play as there are a lot of times you need to pick dialogue options very quick (though maybe lowest difficulty gives you more time, I was on hardest). It is a very good game, if you can call it that, more like an interactive movie. Nothing wrong with that though, I like movies.

I did some asking on forums and found out that Star Ocean 4 and Resonance of Fate contain the Japanese versions. Eternal Sonata/Trusty Bell and Disgaea 3 however do not.

Good PS3 games for learning Japanese? - TaylorSan - 2010-08-03

Yeah Heavy Rain in Japanese would be a major challenge, and at my level the characters would probably suffer the damage. Still I think the format would be good for improving. And the Japanese voice acting looks solid. It's too bad the US disk doesn't have 日本語.

I am pretty ignorant when it comes to video games, but I think a Wii/games for younger demographics would be the best bet for someone interested in learning Japanese from the experience. Most games aimed at adult audiences will require pretty advanced Japanese listening comprehension and reading skills, whereas most Nintendo games have much more learner-friendly grammar and vocabulary. Just depends upon the person's level though, of course Smile But for intermediate students I think playing Zelda or Mario would offer a lot better reinforcement to their knowledge than something like Final Fantasy.

Or maybe I am just a biased Nintendo fangirl, hmm...

Just agreeing with esgrove - Fallout 3 in Japanese is fantastic. Though you do wind up learning a lot of strange nuclear and radiation-related vocabulary. Smile

I found it was really weird how all of the Perks in that game had English names, but the descriptions were in Japanese. Or how some of the UI remained in English (for example, the Start menu screen where it has Continue, Save, Load, etc.).

But anyways, there's tons upon tons of voice acted Japanese and (at least to my ear) it all seemed rather well done.

Does the US version of Fallout 3 play in Japanese, or do I need to order the J version?

Good PS3 games for learning Japanese? - ta12121 - 2010-08-04

i'd say just dive into any j-game for ps3. I was playing a old ps1 rpg in japanese, there was only a few terms i didn't know but aside from that it didn't cuz me to understand less. Still very enjoyable. Also playing the original metal gear solid in japanese.

I think you need the JP version but I'm not 100% sure. Haven't played Fallout 3. Seems tons of the games I play/wanna play don't have Japanese enabled on the US discs, which is a pain in the butt Sad

As it is, the only game I'm looking forward to on the PS3 is Dead Space 2, which I think would be awesome in Japanese. Alas, it's not coming out till next year though >_<

Good PS3 games for learning Japanese? - mentat_kgs - 2010-08-04

You need the JP version. It took a long time to Fallout go to Japan.

I'm also looking forward for Dead Space 2.

Good PS3 games for learning Japanese? - TaylorSan - 2010-08-04

Ahhh too bad. I wonder if that means Fallout 4 will take a long time to get to Japan as well. Well if that's the case I'll just play 3 for a while (I'm definitely getting the J version) - it's a big game, and I don't have too much time on my hands anyway....

Good PS3 games for learning Japanese? - mentat_kgs - 2010-08-04

Fallout 3 was my top favorite game of PS3. More than uncharted2, more than gow3.

Good PS3 games for learning Japanese? - TaylorSan - 2010-08-04

@ mentat_kgs (or anyone else) Did you play it in Japanese ? I'm curious how hard it would be - my level right now is low intermediate at best, so there would be a lot of stuff I wouldn't understand. But I figure visual/situational context and just the need to understand would be enough to play the game without totally falling on my face mission wise. And by the time I get to playing it in a few months hopefully I'll be improved as well (not to mention the size of the game vs my time to play, so I'll be improving a good amount as I slowly play through it). I think this would be a fun way to amp up my studies

Good PS3 games for learning Japanese? - mentat_kgs - 2010-08-05

No, I played in English. I guess it would be pretty hard.
But Fallout is a game you'd like to play many times over and over.
I played it trough 3 times.

Maybe you could play it once in English and then play it again en Japanese.
Does the Japanese has English language available?

Good PS3 games for learning Japanese? - TaylorSan - 2010-08-05

Yeah I'm hoping someone will pop in here who played the Japanese version. My thinking is the sink or swim pressure to understand Japanese would be perhaps good for developing it. Watching a Dorama is passive, but a video game is virtual life and death! But even if I struggle in the game I think it would still be fun to just try it in Japanese.

Good PS3 games for learning Japanese? - Zorlee - 2010-08-05

Am I the only one who finds Fallout 3 (PS3 version) unplayable due to the constant lagging?
I can't believe it got released like that. I didn't believe the bad reviews of the PS3 version until I actually bought it. I played it for one hour, and despite good, Japanese voice-acting I never played it again.

Good PS3 games for learning Japanese? - TaylorSan - 2010-08-05

SHitty! That was my go to J game.....Will have to figure out another title I guess.

Good PS3 games for learning Japanese? - mentat_kgs - 2010-08-06

The US version also lags a bit. But not near to unplayable. It froze a few times, but nothing that autosave didn't fixed it.
