Haha you lived in Tochigi? Me too (Sano) for a year. Now I live in Osaka.

I usually say thanks whenever I would in America. I notice Japanese people don't in many cases I do because I'm America. To me it's important to be as Japanese as possible and be a part of the culture as a native would but when it comes to something simple like this why not be American and just say thanks? どうも~ works fine
