I took my stats in RevTK (this site) and created a graph of which box each kanji was in currently. The ones I haven't added yet are designated at box 0.

Some interesting things about this: I don't have any in box 8 yet but I think I will start getting those reviews in about a month. I started 6 months ago, and I'm at card 1852 right now. You can see the time delay between boxes when the lines in each box stop compared to the lower numbers. It seems that most kanji will stick together and make progress as a group, although there are a lot of kanji that have fallen back in the progression through the boxes.

I did a calculation of the total number of correct reviews I would have to do, assuming no failures, to get everything into box 8, and right now it's 5809 reviews. I've done 12560 reviews since I started, so I have a ways to go. If I calculate where I am assuming all correct reviews in the past, I am actually at 10527 reviews, or 64% along the path. In other words, about 2000 reviews were extra due to failures. I'm seriously wondering how well I will do with the vast majority of cards currently sitting for 3 months in pile 7 and how I will do when they turn up again.

i've been at this a long time, so most things are in box 8. the one thing this plot suggests to me is that 1500-2000 are pretty tough.

actually i take that back. although indeed the higher frames are in lower boxes

Interesting graph, radical_tyro. Nice to see a lot in box 8, that suggests that the method (and your retention) is good. It seems like you have a lot in box 1. Are you leaving a lot of them in the failed pile? Also I noticed 2000-3000 are almost all in box 1 except for a couple here and there that are all the way in box 8, and nothing in between. What is that?

ah. yeah i have a bit under 100 failed cards right now. since i finished RTK a long time ago my main goal these days is just try to keep up with the reviews (it's easy to get busy with other things or just lazy, and then the reviews just snowball) so i add them back in slowly when i get some extra time and don't feel like doing other things.

the ones between 2042-3007: i added and failed them all (with a script) so that i could selectively learn new ones as i come across them. i tend to do pretty well with them, but when i fail them they are behind the RTK1 queue, so rarely get back into the cycle Undecided

- use your favorite plotting program. i used mathematica and i think drivers99 used excel. if you need something for free, check out gnuplot.

Is there any program that's so easy that I just go: copy paste data into it, press a key and voilá, nice picture? *feels like a total n00b* :|

Hey Koos83, I noticed you graphed successcount instead of which box each one was in. Although I bet it's very similar right now since it looks like you are pretty consistently passing most of the cards, because they are so well grouped on 4, 3, 2, 1, based on how recent the cards were.

Here's my failure graph. I think this shows me more than anything else the value of this method (Heisig + SRS), how steeply the number of failures drops off.

Hi - I spent a few minutes messing around with the data.

Check out the "motion chart" linked to this spreadsheet (click the tab called "Gadget1" at the bottom of the screen if you only see data). (Warning, it's a pretty heavy Flash app - might be slow on older computers).

Basically, the gadget shows my progress over time (using the slider at the bottom of the page). I've only got three separate days of data so far, but still kinda neat. The size of the circle is the number of times I've failed the kanji, the color is how long between the last review and the next review (more fine-grained than just using the stack # - the kanji at the very top are in stack 8, and 'easy'), and the position top-to-bottom is how long until the next review, so as cards move down, they're closer to expiring.

The chart is very flexible - you can change the data used for the X, Y, color, and size. Feel free to play around with it!

I did this by taking three separate downloads of my card data on three separate days, giving each day it's own timestamp, then putting them all together in one Google spreadsheet, and then using the Motion Chart gadget to display. Enjoy!

Edit: Ironically, the card I've failed more than any other is frame 331! (I always confuse it with 'defeat').

@mentat_kgs It's possible to has the password through some kind of client script (i.e. JS).
@angerman You can make an SSL connection if you want to be paranoid. You'd have to manually prefix the site with https:// to get your browser talking RSA.
