Hi,

I was wondering if there are some type of resources available that goes over the pronunciation of special characters like "+, -, =, ☆" and so on in japanese. I tried looking but I couldn't find it and I wouldn't know where to begin looking in a dictionary.

On a side note, how do you type the ☆ on a mac? I can't seem to figure it out with the japanese input. Thanks.

For me it shows as the seventh and eighth (hollow and filled, respectively) option for converting ほし.

Edit: this is actually using ことえり/OS X.

In Windows you type ほし (star) and hit space to see ☆ or ★ Smile

How does one get that cute musical note? there must be a full list of these somewhere..

You don't say "comma" "period" "semicolon" etc in English when reading a sentence either..

That link also has other useful information in it -- I can't believe it took me over 10 years of using the IME before I knew that you can hit F7 to convert everything you just typed to katakana...it's kind of embarassing. Sad

"Stole" is a pretty absurd way of putting it; the National Socialist party adopted it as representative of Aryan descent, in accord with archaeological speculation regarding connection with symbols found on German archaeological artifacts.

Considering that everyone under the age of 40 has been brainwashed to think of it as 'the Nazi symbol', I think 'stole' is a pretty accurate word. Simply drawing the symbol in school will get you a trip to the school psychologist because you simply must mean it as a Nazi symbol and there's no way you mean it as 'good luck' or even just a cool shape.

F7 huh? Gotta remember that one, manually switching output to katakana is such a pain. I know I've heard of shortcuts like this before, but I can never remember them.

The OS X IME is far superior to the windows one so you don't need F7. Simply write in capital letters and you get katakana. kore = これ, KORE = コレ

Like Tobberoth implies, ことえり's "F7 trick" is the shift key.

Edit: though apparently it's still not considered very good by at least some Japanese standards. I just wandered into some very amusing rant sessions about it on þe olde intarwebs (obligatory 2ch thread).

Kotoeri's f7 trick is also... f7.

f6 for hiragana
f8 for romaji
f9 for full-width romaji

And yes, hardcore Japanese computer users use third party IME software. Most complaints with the built in ones seem to be about the kanji suggestions not being the best, not the actual interface.

F7 actually uses less keystrokes.

If you have to use CAPS, you either have to constantly hold down the shift key (a pain), or press Caps Lock twice (one more keystroke than simply pressing F7 once)

Shift has less travel, since you just need to hold down a key you're in position to hit anyway.
