I have the Langenscheidt one.

I bought it because I previously had the Langenscheidt for when I was taking German in HS/MS. Now I can tell I need something more... serious, if you will (at least for Japanese). Any recommendations? I suppose it should be furigana? I'll take a look into anything you can inform me about.

Progressive J-E dictionary. Tons of quality example sentences with very natural Japanese and English. If you buy an electronic dictionary that cross-references the example sentences with English search capabilities, you can use it backwards for an E-J dictionary as well. The Canon EX-WORD series of dictionaries can do this.

There's a program called EBWin that's able to use EPWing formats. With that front-end, if you can find Kenkyusha 5th edition (研究社　新和英大辞典 第 5 版) for it, I think you'll be most pleased with the results.

Ok, so it is not exactly a 和英辞書... It has simple definitions in Japanese, with English (and Chinese) equivalents appended. Also has a fair number of example sentences per definition (like 2-4).

I think it made my transition to using a mono-lingual 国語辞典 smoother. I still refer to it when I get to feel like I'm chasing my tail (i.e. looking up words in a circle).

I can't, they all suck. Use a J-E and you won't learn anything; try to use a J-J as soon as possible.

I second the recommendation for EBWin. I use it with the Wadoku EPWing file (Japanese-German), and it's a great program. Very light-weight, non-cluttered.

I'm looking for a physical dictionary, maybe I should have mentioned this. So... I should use a Jap-Jap dictionary? I don't think my Japanese is that advanced, or is there something I'm missing in my perception?

Maybe I should hold onto my Jap-Eng dictionary and then move onto a Jap-Jap one? If so, when should I do that. If so I'll probably get the one that Hashiriya posted a link to.
