Random Pronounciations of Kanji Compounds - hoshitachi - 2009-09-26 This has happened quite alot, whilst I've been watching Japanese TV, but, obviously I don't know enough to know context etc, but I've noticed some Kanji compounds have furigana over the top that don't add up the only one i can immediately think of is 太陽 which is one of the few compounds i know and is たいよう sun but the furigana over the top read ひかり is this the 光? why is this? The characters in the story are really saying the furigana word, but the kanji tells you a bit more about what it means. You see this a lot with english words (the kanji tell you what the katakana furigana means to Japanese people), but you also see it with Japanese words in the furigana. For example I just saw 他人 furigana-ed as ひと in Crayon Shin-chan (RIP). Random Pronounciations of Kanji Compounds - masaman - 2009-09-26 I was appalled when I saw someone named his kid 光宙 on TV.
