Question about new version of Anki - Capsule - 2009-09-09
Hi, I haven't upgraded my version of Anki for ages because it got to a certain point where the automatic reading recognition wasn't working with a newer version, and so I just kept refusing to download.
I have downloaded the next version now and have started making a deck or two on it and I have a few questions. Before someone suggests this; yes, I have read the official documentation, but am still unsure about a couple of things and yes maybe I should post on the Anki forum, but I just can't bothered to sign up for yet another thing on the internet.
Basically, what is the difference between the Recognition and Recall type of decks? Is recog the equivalent of of having 1 card for each fact as a opposed to 2? So if a card looks like this:
Expression 日本
Meaning Japan
Reading にほん
Tags Basic
and is set only as Recognition does this mean it will only ever appear as the 'side' of the card with the Japanese on and I'd have to guess the English? It will never flip over like in the old Anki? If so, is this then what Recall mode is for - it would show me the other 'side' of the card also?
If this is the case then another question is, if I have already made some cards as just Recognition cards, is there anyway to alter them to become Recall cards as well? I already wrote out a fair few without realising the Recog/Recall stuff in the new version was there.
And finally, my last question: I have an old deck which I am going to convert using an older version of anki (apparently), if I convert it will it be just a Recog deck or a Recog/Recall deck? Basically, will it work properly in the new version? I want to see both cards for each fact.

It should work properly in the latest version of Anki IMO. And you can add recognition or production cards from any given fact easily through the edit menu.

Thanks man. Do you know if it's possible to change a previous card that was set only as 'Recognition' to 'Recall' as well?
