Smart.fm: Clueless at P.R. ? - bodhisamaya - 2009-09-08

I have been enamored with Smart.fm for seven months now but... Are they being arrogant or are they correct in that the vocal minority is wrong?

This seems like the exact same thing that happens when any social networking site changes in any way. Lots of outcry about how the site is ruined, then everybody gets used to it and doesn't care until something else changes. At least Smart.fm responds to its users, and even seems willing to make small concessions while working towards their vision of what they want their site to be.

I don't care about "activity streams" and I don't care about most of the other things that are somehow connected to the social network meme and introduce a lot of unimportant, redundant noise that makes people feel important. I like smart.fm for the learning part - including the collaboration idea, so everything seems fine besides its a pity that they don't want to improve their roots. There is still enough room for improvement.

Yeah, they are a little bit arrogant... perhaps because the programmers behind the changes are speaking but its nothing new. People are humans which behave as they always do. And the users that cry the loudest should look into the mirror to see how emotional dependent they are on a single web page/community. It was the same, when Last.fm changed the design, its always the same when admin X changes important behavior Y of forum Z and even when a moderator closes/deletes topic T in an arrogant act of divine intervention. And you are completely helpless.
Its just the Internet and most of the time you are only a little and unimportant user of millions. So much freedom... so its better to be free and not dependent.

Sorry, I didn't wanted to write that much.

EDIT: "Mcjon01" was faster with similar ideas.

They could make the site fly and shoot laser beams out of its eyes. As long as you can turn it off, I could care less. ^^

hehe... looks like i switched over to a monolingual dictionary in just the nick of time Wink i'm still getting a flood of smart.fm messages in my inbox though of people joining my old RtK lists that i had made...

I don't care because I've never used the site, just the sentences in Anki, but someone really ought to tell these ppl that it's not a good idea to arbitrarily publish their 'beta' changes or rough drafts of site design w/o considering users. Seems like they did the same thing with the transfer from iKnow to smart.fm.

People are mad that a -free- site is doing whatever it wants to with their own site? Wow. Seriously, just wow. If they don't like it, they can go make their own site.

But wait! What's actually happening is that the users are providing constructive feedback!

There's no hubris here, except that of the first post in this thread. Smart.fm isn't here to please your every whim. They're here to make money by making a great learning system. There -will- be bumps along the way, but it's their vision that made it so great in the first place, and it's their vision that will continue its evolution. You have no rights there.

Could this whole 'drama with the community of users due to site changes' be part of their PR rather than just poor implementation skills? Seems like Facebook is into that. Playing the abusive boyfriend that really loves you. I guess that's another reason I have a hard time caring, I'm too cynical and can't be bothered to get upset w/ them or praise their groundbreaking use of words like 'semantic' and 'contextual'.

If you look at the profiles of those who were the most upset by the lack of communication, they are also the same users who have volunteered the most time creating lists as a way of contributing to help make the site better. I for one have spent at least as much time creating lists, typing in sentences (in two languages) and getting help with readings as I have studying on the site. It is a work in progress and everyone understands that. We displayed "hubris" Rolleyes only because we felt we had a role in making smart.fm a great site. They actively encourage feedback. When the feedback (for this feature) was negative, there was an initial arrogant response. This was followed by an acknowledgement that communication was missing and the feature was quickly improved.

@bodhisamaya

I wouldn't pay that post too much mind. If only we could all be so objective all the time... >_>
