Take the JLPT or not? - ocircle - 2009-09-04 Hey all... I think it may be too late to register for the JLPT by now, not that I know fore sure, but I've spent this summer studying to take JLPT1 this december. I haven't taken any JLPT tests before (I've taken a lot of practice tests though -- pretty much all of the tests back to 2003, and I do okay. 50-60% right now... gotta make up that missing 10%) but well, let me move on to what I really wanted to ask: Should I take the JLPT1 this December, or take it after getting to Japan (Dec 2010)? I started studying for the JLPT because I'm planning to work in Japan next summer (your typical English teaching gig). I had nothing to do (just finished college) so I thought I would work on my Japanese. But I don't know if it would be very critical for me to have a JLPT certification before going to Japan or getting the certification after going to Japan... Towards the end of my year teaching English in Japan, I'm hoping to have to option of getting a different job (in case teaching really doesn't turn out to be my thing). I've heard there are extremely few companies that will bother with a foreigner, but the word on the internet is that if you have a JLPT1 certification, you may at least get an interview. But there's the changes they're making to the test too.. not that those are expected to effect level 1. Take the JLPT or not? - Jarvik7 - 2009-09-04 No offense, but 50-60% is not "doing okay". You should be aiming for 100%, not the bare minimum passing line. Having JLPT certification is pretty much mandatory if you want any job in Japan where you must use Japanese on a daily basis (aka no Eikaiwa jobs or most IT jobs). You will of course need the ability to impress once you get an interview, so you should be able to comfortably pass the level in order to realistically claim to be that level. Registration isn't open forever. Hell in my case the seating is limited to 500 people... so I don't know if there's still seats. One person I talked to about this mentioned that next year's test will be harder. And there won't be any previous examples of the new test, so I'm thinking it would be best if I aimed for this winter. I'm still studying 100~150 words a day regardless of whether or not I will take the test this year or not, but the test changing to a possibly unfamiliar format makes me kind of nervous.
