Tae Kim Highlights - georgative - 2009-11-15 I'm at a really early stage of learning japanese, so sorry for the silly questions I was wondering if anyone can explain to me how the Tae Kim highlights work... For example on this page: http://www.guidetojapanese.org/learn/grammar/verbparticles toward the bottom it says 何できた if you read the highlights you get なに で くる why does きた get highlighted as くる? Also, some of the time it's confusing because it's not clear if the highlighted version includes the ending or not! So : 帰らない is actually かえらない and not かえるらない So am I right in understanding that what comes up in the highlight is the unaltered version of that word (which would have the same kanji, but different hiragana at the end), and that you kinda have to figure out what is means now in its new form? PS: is 飲んだ。 = のむなだ or のなだ? Tae Kim Highlights - samesong - 2009-11-15 The popup gives you the present tense/dicationary form of the verb. きた is past tense, and くる is present tense. The same goes for 帰らない - that is the negative form of the verb. The dictionary form is 帰る(かえる) Once you get to verb conjugation it will make a whole lot more sense
