I've just got round to installing the homebrew channel onto my wii, does any one have any good recommendations for any good Japanese games? I don't mean the endless load of shovelware and party games, I mean, surely there are some proper games on the system?

Surely it depends what type of games ur into? Adventure, puzzle, RPG? Its not region locked so you can get whatever games you want (except Chinese apparently).
When you set your lang to Japanese would all the games become Japanese language?

Okami, if you haven't already played it (or again, if you have...not that I'm biased or anything)? New Play Control Pikmin 1/2? For ones that haven't been translated (yet), there's Muramasa, and Fatal Frame, oh, and Fragile I guess, though I have my doubts 'bout that one going by the battle system.
I looked into installing the homebrew channel myself, but the instructions gave me a headache. Think I'll stick with the DS for now.

if you mean actual wii games, i heard that twilight princess is entirely in furigana... i have yet to make a good working copy for my wii though... will american wiis play japanese games if you have a modchip? mine plays the american games just fine but won`t load the japanese ones that i tried making...
now if you want to get a real game system to do some serious japanese game playing, i highly recommend a ps3... making a japanese account on it gives access to all kinds of japanese game demo goodies...
追伸：i heard that Muramasa for wii is dubbed in Japanese with English subtitles...

This is actually my sisters wii, but she hardly ever uses it =D

You don't need a modchip, you can very easily soft mod the console, with nothing more than an sd card (don't need twilight princess anymore). You can find instructions at http://bannerbomb.qoid.us/
As for the type of games I'm into, Mostly RPG's but I'm not to bothered as long as it's fun to play and in Japanese.

Well Okami and Oboromuramasa are both great games, and definatly worth a check - if only for their beatifull japanese art style.
No More Heroes is also quite fun to play.
The Naruto Gekitou Ninja Taisen series can also be a lot of fun, together with a few friends.
...thats about it though :/. not that many JRPGs on the system, at least not that I'm aware of.

If you like roguelikes, I think the Shiren the Wanderer game (不思議のダンジョン 風来のシレン3 からくり屋敷の眠り姫) would be really good, even though I haven't played it. I played the DS Shiren game (in English) and loved it. It's one of my favorite games ever. Roguelikes definitely aren't for everyone though.
(I actually installed the homebrew channel on my Wii and bought the Japanese Shiren game, but haven't played it. I haven't been playing video games for quite a while now.)

Monster Hunter 3. It's epic. Also for the wii the graphics and music are fantastic. Probably not great japanese practice though unless you pay to play online with other japanese guys

I'm a mystery fan so these story games are awesome fun and full of easy to follow dialogue (アナザーコード more so than 428). アナザーコード has ふりがな, makes looking up words less painful.
