As someone who has done 3200 cards of core6000 this is a great filler. Its a little boring, but it asks you simple questions about understanding that helps you learn the nuances of the language. In the guided mode there are only 12 questions to do a day as well so it keeps it from becoming too tedious.

Its completely in Japanese so the immersion factor is great.

Ps. On the Amazon page in the 'recommended' section there are a bunch of other Japanese learning games that haven't been posted in this thread before. Might be worth checking out.

Hi everyone! (i know this post is a bit old, but i think is the right place to post my doubt).

Soon i'm going to import a japanese 3DS, with the price cut coming i think it's the right time.
In choosing which games to import (obviously Ocarina of Time), i went through this game:
ビックリマン漢熟覇王 三位動乱戦創紀 (Bikkuriman Kanjuku Haoh: Sanmi Douran Sensouki).

I find out that is a sort of kanji cards based combat, but i really don't know exactly what it is. And i can't find reviews or other information about the gameplay and the kanji element.

Trailer here:

So anyone know this game? Can somone try to explain what it is, since it seems cool but i don't know if its worth the money... =D

I really felt the need to second Sloane to MacHale no Nazo no Story, which I discovered through this thread (where it was mentioned as スローンとマクヘールの謎の物語) It's actually rather addictive, and very good for immersion. It's ALL reading based, though it gives you something else to do so it's not JUST about reading. I'm at the level where I usually dislike Furigana, but here it's written in a lighter font and easy to ignore, while also helpful when occasionally needed. The language is usually fairly simple but it's quite nice to pick up a word here and there along the way while having close to 100% comprehension. Digging around a story for clues also gives you ample chance to learn any new vocab contextually.

There's also a second one (4151) which according to Amazon seems to have better riddles.

violagirl23 Wrote:Hm. These all look good. My main problem is remembering a kanji in a word, but not the position in the word, like 報 in 情報, seeing it in another word and not remembering if the pronunciation is ほう or じょう. I think radical study would help with that, to remember how kanji are pronounced (not what they mean). What might be the best of the kanji games for that? Or is 漢検3 just the best overall? I've passed JLPT2, to give an idea of my level. I've failed 1級 twice though. -_-
I've had the same problem, I just couldn't figure out how to properly learn yomi, but it'll get better as you use the same kanji in different words. Try to find 2 or 3 other words which use the same kanji, you'll distinguish it easily.

Anyway, I'm going to try some of the games recommended here. I've tried some before, but they looked awfully boring. I hope these are somewhat better.

I am having a little difficulty in understand violagirl23's core problem. 情報 is じょうほう, where in 情報, 情 is じょう and 報 is ほう. 漢検DS3 isn't bad, but can be very difficult. You need to know the readings of a Kanji to use it. If 漢検DSトレーニング doesn't seem to have なぞり練習(Kanji practice) like 250万人の漢検 プレミアム had. However, it does allow you to choose from a selection of options for some tests.

They can be very boring, but you will learn a lot from them. One important thing use it everyday.

Hmm, for violagirl23's problem I'd maybe look into Nazotte Oboeru Otona no Kanji Renshuu Kanzenban (or Kaiteiban, which is newer). It lets you add problem kanji to a custom study list simply by writing it in, then allows you to test yourself going from hiragana to kanji and vice versa in various compound positions and readings. Two other things I like about it: puts you on a consistent 5 kanji per day, ~2 level-up tests per week program, and teaches you new readings by inference when going through the lessons (eg. Each kanji gets two questions. It'll sometimes have a word like 資金, where you must write きん for 金, and the next word will be something like かな錆, where you know that かな MUST be 金)

So in general the most recommended kanji games seem to be Nazotte and Kanken3...any other good ones I missed? I just got a DS emulator android app which works great, and I'd love to put some good kanji games, or good games in general on my phone to play while waiting in lines and such after I've finished my anki reviews.
