my computer finally gave out yesterday. Everyone back up your cards!!!!!!!! Do it now!!!

. Luckily, a good chunk of them i know so well now i won't forget.Anyway, so, i need to get a new computer. But, my knowledge of computers kind of sucks. I need something really cheep (around or less than £300). What should i look for? Are there any cheep brands to seriously avoid? Should i be going for the amount of space, or something else?
I don't need to do much, but being able to download stuff, watch stuff, etc would be great...
Hope you can help, i'm a bit lost... tyty

You should have been syncing to anki online, even if you don't review online.
In any case, just because your computer will no longer turn on doesn't mean the data is gone, or even that your computer is dead. Usually a non-booting computer just means that Windows ate itself.

It may be possible to plug your hard disk into another machine and recover the data.

Right now I cannot but agree with jmignot : try to recover the hard disk.... This kind of s... happened me once and for a minimal fee I just had the hard disk changed into a external hard drive
For the future as jarvik said you have anki online.... Even better you can use dropbox which allows you to store up to 2gb for free with a permanent synchronisation. Actually it s complementary as you can use both at the same time which will provide you a double safety . I triple it with a save on external hard disk.

Yeah I have mine synced via dropbox, via anki online and also a copy of my deck on my iPhone via AnkiMini. If something fails I've got 3 backup locations, and its not likely to be too much of a problem.

The fact that the "computer gave out" doesn't mean that your hard disk is necessarily the victim. It may be any other part. You should first verify that before falling into despair. Don't give up hope!

Does your father know how to put computers together? If he does than you could build a nice cheap computer for yourself. It would be a very solid machine. Buying all the parts and putting a computer together will save you a ton of money. Plus your computer would be able to play games(if you are into that stuff). 400 dollars/euros etc... for a new PC and you could get something like 3.0 GHZ processor, 4GB of Ram, 640 GB HDD and a nice 512MB graphics card

Whatever you end up getting, I would recommend getting an external harddrive. They're relatively cheap in terms of how much space you get, and they're really useful for setting up to automatically backup things. Also, all that extra space just means more space for japanese media haha.
