Learn Japanese used by the news media - chamcham - 2009-08-10

Hello everyone.

For anyone who wants to learn Japanese as spoken in the news,
there is actually one authentic resource that might be the holy
grail people are looking for. It's so good, that you might as well
throw away anything else you were using to study,

It's called the Fuji News Network (http://www.fnn-news.com/), a
major news channel in Japan. Some news stories have streaming
videos (with a video icon next to the title) on the web.

And what's great is that they don't simply give you a text summary
of the news story. They give you an EXACT word-for-word transcription
of what the newscaster is saying.

So it's perfect for SRS..... :-p
And many transcriptions are only 1 to 3 short paragraphs at most.

Does anyone know of any other japanese news/TV/media sites
that do something similar to Fuji News Network (in terms of exact
Japanese subtitles)?

Thanks.

TBS has almost exact subtitles but I think FNN is better when it comes to the word for word articles

If you were going to SRS the audio, how would you do that (download it and cut it)? :o

Learn Japanese used by the news media - bombpersons - 2009-08-11

Download it and cut it up with audacity.

While we're at it, yet another site, Tokyo MX News:

A better idea might be to use a Japanese Text-To-Speech program to pronounce every sentence and save them to individual files. Since you have exact subs in the text descriptions, it'd be really easy.

I watch FNN every day online but also second Tokyo MX Youtube channel as their news has closed captioned Tokyo MX News

except that the flow , the tone and sometimes even the prononciation is off...
TTS is fine as a secondary source .

Learn Japanese used by the news media - chamcham - 2009-08-11

Yes, TTS is not perfect.

But it's much easier than chopping video/audio into little pieces.
So there is a trade-off.

If the video is in AVI format, I'd actually recommend Virtualdub (and only
save the audio stream). It's what many anime groups use to edit their videos.

Audacity can record the audio via wave-out or stereo-out or whatever it is called. All you have to do is play the thing and the audio is in audacity.
For breaking up an mp3 or a recording via wave-out, use labels. The default is CTRL+B. Select the area in which the sentence is spoken, press CTRL+B and, if you want, write a label.
Using Export Multiple you export each label into its own mp3.

EDIT: I use audacity in this way to pick sentences from youtube videos, they sometimes even show big subs of what a person just said (I screenshot that, and record the audio)

This thread is of a lot of interest to me as I'm nearing the stage of really developing my audio environment. Is there a nice tutorial or epic thread that puts forth the audio generation (TTS and all that) or is that information scattered about?

Also, do any of you have favorite continuous stream sources? FNN is great, but for background listening when I'm busy with other work it would be nice to have a source that goes longer than 2-minute clips or what not (am I missing a different link on the FNN site? For now I just follow the little video camera icons Big Grin). Listening to a baseball game online was great, I'd recommend that option for those of you that are interested (I found a stream of that via justin.tv, but that was random... No solid resource, sorry!)

Cheers.

I know this topic is old, but thanks to Bokusenou it was revived and I'm very happy about that Big Grin Does anyone have done the subs2srs thing with News actually?

Not exactly news, but I like to have QVC (http://qvc.jp/cont/top/Main) on in the background when I'm not doing any serious study. The live stream is essentially two or three people having a conversation about the latest "tat" they're flogging off, which I find good for basic immersion.

Do you know how to download the videos from these sites?

Actually best for Subs2SRS. If you go the main page you can get a "clear" audio.

That's the NHK site for foreigners and kids, pretty cool site if you're interested in learning the news.

Learn Japanese used by the news media - rich_f - 2012-05-08

That's a pretty cool site. The reader voice sounds a little bit like Misaki, but I can't tell for sure.

Deutsche Welle had/still has? dunno a version of the news that's similar to that as well, where the news is read more slowly for beginners/foreigners/etc.
