I enjoyed "Departures" (おくりびと) a lot (won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film of the Year, 2009). I haven't downloaded it yet to check which version it is for, but the movie itself can be easily found.

I watched Space Battleship Yamato 2010 the other day with the JP subs and I have to say they really helped. I would have been mostly lost with just the audio. My reading really is better than my listening still.

*Very poor quality OCR of 13 Assassins was all I could procure. If you can find the zdzdz version of 13 Assassins (which is the complete version rather than the mutilated American version, from what I've gathered) and want to extract the .idx/.sub (with this demux/GUI suite: http://www.videohelp.com/tools/MKVExtractGUI-2), that'd be useful.

This will be the last batch from me, I think. I'll eventually recompile all into one large batch again. The zdzdz releases generally feature Japanese .idx/.sub files in the .mkv, which you may extract with the aforementioned tool(s), if you have such .mkv files (for ah, public domain Japanese movies). (Here's the links again, just make sure the GUI is in the same folder as the mkvtoolnix stuff: http://www.videohelp.com/tools/MKVtoolnix and http://www.videohelp.com/tools/MKVExtractGUI-2 - It only takes a few seconds, according to my friend's friend who uses these with public domain .mkv files).

Added a .idx/.sub version of 13 Assassins so no need to rely on the terrible OCR'd .srt; judging by the runtime, I believe this (Zoo's version) is also the full rather than Americanized version:

How do I get this back to being readable?Well, if it's Japanese text and you have display issues, most likely it's related to the encoding, i.e. Shift_JIS or UTF-8, etc. If you're not already aware, it's perhaps something you should learn about if you're going to be studying Japanese.
If you open the .srt in Firefox, just go to View→Character Encoding and try to change it to Shift_JIS. I think with mixed text files (files with English and Japanese) Firefox has a hard time automatically recognizing stuff. If you're in Notepad++ you can just click on Encoding or something like that.
