Palm or Pocket PC? - Christoph - 2007-01-29

Hi all,

I'm looking into getting a PDA, and I was just wondering if anyone could tell me which is better and why.

Any and all opinions would be appreciated.

I like Palms more in general and imo Twinkle and PADict are really the killer apps for Japanese students there, but perhaps ppc's have some good things too -- I do not know much about them though.

I think this is a FAQ... :-)

I'm sure that you'll find here several threads on this subject (search for Palm, PDA, PocketPC, etc.), so I won't repeat what was previously written. But here's what's new for me: I just bought a Palm T|X (aka "Palm TX") to replace my Zire21. It's an amazing machine, best bang-for-the-buck I could find. There's some excellent (and free) software for it for learning Nihongo, plus I can use it as a PDA, surf the web (WiFi), watch movies, play games, ...

My only "complaint" is that (at least for now), due to runtime memory limitations (not store memory), there's no simple way to use sites that completely relies on Shockwave, Flash or other types of plugins. Some Ajax (Web 2.0) sites can also show some problems, too (including one called Reviewing the Kanji). As Fabrice is busy with other things, I'll try to write a "proxy server" so people with PDAs, cell phones, etc. can use all the site facilities.

Did you try different browsers?

Palm or Pocket PC? - Ricardo - 2007-01-30

Not yet. I just installed NetFront, but I don't have a WiFi hotspot available now. :-(

BTW, if anyone have a TX with japanese support, please tell us how you like it. I started a thread on the Palm Support Forums about browsing japanese sites. I plan to update it later with any new findings. Please drop by if you have any tips, too.

I am a relatively new T|X user as well, and am extremely satisfied with my experience (other than the troubles with a few sites). I have installed CJKOS to display Japanese text and POBox as my input interface. The official page link for the Palm OS5 version seems to be down, but I am 99% sure that I downloaded POBox from the following location, http://homepage.mac.com/yasseima/FileSharing14.html . Back to the original post, I assume a Pocket PC may be a little 'easier' to configure for Japanese support, but if you are looking for value and are willing to put in a little extra time fooling around with things the Palm T|X is a very nice purchase.

Wouldn't it more useful to solve those problems with PDAs or to assume support of parallel set of RTK pages (which is what Fabrice don't have resources to do)? Can't see how such proxy can be written in straightforward way, without reinventing the RTK site engine's wheel, that is kind of globally greesemoneying it.

Hmm, I saw your post about RevTK compatibility with the Palm T|X, and some other posts about Japanese font problems, I was just wondering about the differences and whether anyone could recommend for or against either.

Thanks for the T|X mention though, I'll go check it out. Having said that, does anyone know a Palm (or Pocket PC) that "would" be compatible with the site?

im in japan, sitting in one of the craziest mobilephone cultures in the world. and i just got a new phone.

mostly i am happy using this site from my pc when i have time at the office or home. but if there were a way to access the site from mobilephones, it would be a dream.

this is especially true of the review area. honestly, the study area on mobile would not be as practical (and expensive packetwise). but the review area would be ultra-convenient while on trains, etc.

that said, many of the new phones in japan do have pc site viewer capabilities, though packetwise, they are outrageously expensive (up to 100-500yen per page). anyway, before i bust my bank trying that option, i would be very interested in any developments that bring this site to pdas or mobiles.

Sorry, I'm not sure if I understood your questions...

"Those problems" that I mentioned can't be solved without writing an entire new web browser for every PDA, cell phone, etc. available on the market just to support just this site. And such software won't run on older or more limited devices due to memory restrictions, anyway.

This has nothing to do with Greasemonkey, and there's no need to reinvent anything. It's very straightforward, actually. BTW, my small GM scripts and a future proxy for this site are only possible due to the (IMO, at least) elegant design and implementation done by Fabrice. It's easy to understand what the site does and why. Not only it's possible to make such a proxy, it's easy.

Well, at least I guess. We shall see soon... ;-)

Hi decamer0n!

That's exactly why I asked Fabrice for such kind of support on his site. Even if it was a very simple page, with only this kind of function, it would really be a great addiction...

I'm glad to know more people are interested in this project. Maybe I'll find some time this weekend to at least make a first version...
