No, it's a search engine. Your results are listed with the searched word in the middle, with leading and trailing portions of the results on the left and right.
Kind of cool to see how a certain grammar or vocabulary is used in the real world. Wished that there were better site selections, like limiting search to specific web domain or site.

Now that Twitter has remodeled its home page to emphasize 'realtime search', you can--as someone else here mentioned--type stuff in there: for colloquial, contemporary examples just search for whatever you're interested in at a given moment.

At first I brushed this site off, but when I decided to make sentences for some compound kanji that most natives know how to read, but aren't usually taught anywhere, my usual sources came up empty. Then I remembered the post, tried the link, most of the results were garbage, but I found decent sentences.
I have to say, I'm bookmarking this. I don't think it's as useful for beginners, but if you what you're doing it's a nice tool.

Some (few) of the sentences have errors, some are little strange, but not other resource has so many easy to find sentences.

about a year ago when I started using a SRS I got an interest into it and I showed a couple of sentences to one of my teachers at Yamasa : she clearly told me there was something off about the sentence even if she wasnt really able to tell what (to be fair as I had barely started , back then my understanding of japanese was REALLY poor) . 6months ago back to my country other school , other teacher no problem whatsoever , go ahead you can use them.
It makes me a bit uneasy as I m still wondering if the latter was totally incompetent or the former was dishonest for some some unacknowledged reasons.
But it seems to me that ALC sentences either comes from a dictionnary or from internet articles .... so I ll bet on the secund option .
Anyway ALC is not meant to be a primary source for the long term : past a year /half and a year you really should try using japanese dictionary either yahoo dic or a EPWING offline dictionnary . In the meantime even if there were some flaws here and there I don t think it would permanently harm your skills.
