Anyone in New York City? - Yonosa - 2009-07-29 I am in New York for a week while I wait for my visa to be processed, I am just wondering is anyone on here from NYC? Anyone in New York City? - Ryuujin27 - 2009-07-29 I am, but am currently in Japan for another 5 days (will be back on the 4th). Need some info on cool Japanese places to go? Anyone in New York City? - Zorlee - 2009-07-29 I´m going there in a couple of weeks, so I´ll just miss you... But I´m very interested in some cool Japanese places to go in NYC, Ryuujin
Anyone in New York City? - TheTrueBlue - 2009-07-29 Proud Brooklynite here. Not sure if I could help you in any way with the visa thing though. While you're in the city, check out Brooklyn's pizza! The best in the world! Try Original's! Anyone in New York City? - Ryuujin27 - 2009-07-30 Sure thing Zorlee! So, if you want some great Japanese food (still struggling to find better Okonomiyaki in Japan when compared to this place), pop on over to the East Village and go to St. Marks (between 7th and 9th street) between 2nd and 3rd avenue. You should be able to find a sign for Oh! Taisho! This is one absolutely amazing yakitori place! They chefs and staff are super friendly, and are fun to talk to in Japanese. Oh! Taisho! opens at 5:30. I'd recommend getting there before that slightly, because by 5:45 the place will be packed. After that, for some sake/beer or a different meal, you can go uptown to 49th between 6th avenue and Broadway, and you'll have to look closely at the signs to find a place called "Hagi (萩)" This is a great sake bar with some excellent food! I recommend their dish called ナポリタン. Careful with the Japanese thought! They just recently started hiring Chinese waiting staff that they send to foreigners. Make sure to request your table in Japanese if you want to speak it ;-). Or you can sit at the bar and make small talk with the usual bar tender, who is pretty cute Let's see, after that there are various restaurants, but none that stick out in my mind like Oh! Taisho! and Hagi. However, you can always pick up a japanese paper from a Japanese bookstore and find some others if you want! There's a decent shabu shabu place I think. As for bookstores, there's 3 but only 2 worth mentioning. Kinokuniya - Across from Byant Park. Between 40th and 41st street on 6th avenue. They relocated to here a while ago (2 years or so), and it was a great move in my opinion. The new store is massive and has everything you'd ever want. Cool staff here too Book Off - Gotta love discounted books! They are across from the NYC Public Library (main old building). Just find that huge building on 5th avenue between 40th and 42nd, then head across from it down 41st street. Book Off will be on the right there. After that, you can look up events here: http://www.japansociety.org/ Then you can go visit them if there's anything you want to see. They are over on 47th street between 2nd and 1st avenue. Great place, great people, great events! Hope you have a good time! Let me know if you also want more new yorkish things to do haha Anyone in New York City? - Zorlee - 2009-07-30 Wow! Thank you so much for that, Ryuujin!! I´ll definitely check out those resturants! =) I´ve never had any Japanese food, except from your usual Sushi and Ramen, so hopefully I can get some good stuff in there! And my credit card may bleed after a visit or ten to those bookstores, haha!
Anyone in New York City? - blannk - 2009-07-30 I can add to the Japanophile's list of Manhattan spots The Kitano, both the hotel itself and the restaurant on premises, 66 Park Avenue @ East 38th. It's not cheap, but it's not the Ritz Carlton, either. A welcome touch of Japanese elegance in central Manhattan. HELL Yea ....and oh, as I was browsing, some old woman who was another customer asked in broken english " Yu kan reado da-to?" ... I was " Why would I buy it, if I couldn't read it?" She said " Oh, dato is turue"... I walked away and continued browsing. Too Funny |
