I got the idea after seeing this Wikitionary kanji entry which included a random example sentence from Death Note:

Basically, it's just RTK + Japanese keyword, except taken from manga, maybe with the panel as an image? Just block out the word on the image and leave the furigana/add the reading as text to the card.

It would probably work the same using novels or drama, but there wouldn't really be much point having an image for a novel. Though maybe drama/anime screenshots might help as a visual aid, but I can't see it helping that much. Then again, neither would specific manga panels.

The cons of making a deck would be having to find (and then edit) an image for every kanji, like the early ones used mainly in names.

I think that would put you spending way too much time on RTK. It's meant to be a crutch to help you go faster later, not as an end in itself.

That idea could be great for sentences later, though.

I thought the whole Japanese keyword concept was for after you've finished RTK. At least from personal experience, I tried to use Japanese keywords after having stopped RTK about half way through, but found I was struggling a bit and wasn't really getting the benefit of RTK any more.

I haven't done much about a kanji version (I thought I ought to get around to finishing RTK normally first), but I have started trying manga images for vocabulary.

But a JLPT list might be a good idea. It'd probably be a lot easier than finding example of kanji mostly used in names, etc. And I've been thinking about taking the JLPT, so would need to learn the vocab.

Edit; I might make a start at this tonight. I compiled a file of JLPT vocab for all levels from lists online. How I was thinking of doing it was just reading something, then searching for the words in the files, deleting words as I find them.

Though maybe this should have its own topic now it's veered off in another direction.

Never mind, I meant to post in the light novel thread.

well, why don't you guys draw your own manga and incorporate RtK or vocab into it? Wink

But how JLPT-friendly are they?

With the link to the light novel site here recently, I though maybe it could be expanded to include light novels. It would give extra variety. And if they're the right format, then it would be easy to just search for words.

IceCream Wrote:cool. yeah, i agree, it's easier to find the words naturally as your reading, and then search them on the list...

i looked at it too tonight, one thing that really shocked me was how many words i've been entering that aren't on the JLPT lists at all! Personally, i'm not thinking of taking JLPT for a good while, but there's loads of people who are going through the word lists and learning...
I was surprised at first at how much JLPT vocab I found while trying it, actually. But then in some parts (a news report) there was almost none. You wouldn't be able to read it completely, but it would be a pretty good start at least.

Quote:So, we need a way of different people being able to update what they've done... hmm, im not sure what the best way is, the only way i could think of would be to have a spreadsheet of the word lists online. Then, whenever anyone adds a new card to their deck, they can search the spreadsheet and put their name next to the word. Tag the card in anki as they're making it (JLPT1/2/3/4), and every so often upload the media & deck files, then 1 person can collate it in one deck & reupload. Sounds a bit complex, but shouldn't be too much effort... unless anyone can think of a better way?

we could also have seperate columns on the spreadsheet for boxes in which the meaning of the word is exemplified vs, boxes where the word is simply used, so better ones can be found and updated. Or, people using the deck can mark which cards are too unclear when read without context or something.
I'm not sure about the best way to organise it. Maybe a site or database would be useful. Each level can have a its own page/section, then from there a page for word (= a lot of pages) or groups of words (= single pages bit more cluttered) which has a list of clips using that word. Maybe with a text transcript for the images? Then if people want to see if there's another sentence containing that word, they can just search for it on the site. (To just list all available images featuring the word listed on their individual page.)

But maybe a spreadsheet would be easier still.
